The gasoline discount on the green islands starts on Monday with no news for Lanzarote

In February, 95 gasoline was sold in Gran Canaria at an average of 1.255 euros per liter, while in La Palma it cost 1.427 euros and in Lanzarote 1.344 euros.

The Canary Islands Government announced this Tuesday that the entry into force of the 20 cents per liter fuel bonus on the green islands (La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro) will be effective as of April 1.

The bonus will not include the eastern islands of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, which also register prices higher than those offered in the capital islands. The opposition in the Cabildo of Lanzarote has been demanding in recent months a bonus adjusted to the prices of the island of Lanzarote.

In February, 95 gasoline was sold in Gran Canaria at an average of 1.255 euros per liter, while in La Palma it cost 1.427 euros and in Lanzarote 1.344 euros.

To obtain the discount on the green islands, the Minister of Finance, Matilden Asián, stressed: “It is important to point out that citizens do not have to do absolutely anything, just go with their vehicles to the gas stations and, directly, the bonus will be applied to them in the final price when paying.”

This extraordinary bonus is applicable to the price of gasoline, diesel and marine diesel for land and sea vehicles, with the exception of fuel dedicated to private recreational navigation.

Could be extended in 2025

The bonus is incompatible with the partial refund of the special tax of the autonomous community on petroleum-derived fuels to farmers and transporters, so it will be the decision of the farmer or transporter to choose, in each refueling, to apply the 20 cent bonus or the partial refund.

For this, they will have a QR code that they must present whenever they choose to take advantage of the bonus. The application period for this measure will be, in principle, until December 31, 2024.

However, it may be extended during the first six months of 2025 if the global average retail price of fuel on the green islands is more than 0.20 euros higher than the global average retail price on the islands of Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote and Tenerife, the Government adds.

The application of the measure has required more time than expected and, initially, both the president of the Cabildo of La Palma, Sergio Rodríguez, and the Minister of Ecological Transition and Energy, Mariano Hernández Zapata, had dated the start of the measure "throughout February" and, later, "before the end of March", although it will finally be effective on the first day of April.
