The mayor of Arrecife, Yonathan de León, has celebrated that the Port Authority of Las Palmas complies with the plenary agreement and has begun to "remove that fence which was described nearly two decades ago as wall of shame by the residents of Arrecife and the island's fishing community".

The city thus recovers a plot of 5,400 square meters next to the Port of Arrecife that "will be transformed into a new and large green lung next to the primitive pier of ‘Porto Naos’".

The enclosure in concrete was built nearly two decades ago and now the Port Authority is forced to execute a firm judicial ruling for the elements of that construction.

In recent months, the Port Authority of Las Palmas tendered the works, and has executed the installation of the new perimeter fence, more integrated, and that reduces the visual impact. The legislation obliges State Ports, such as Arrecife, to have security fences in their port area. Now, since this week, those concrete structures are being removed.

The Arrecife city council reports that throughout 2026, once the demolition of that enclosure is completed, "that area will be integrated as a public, and green space for Arrecife where a large park of more than 5,000 square meters of surface area will be built". For the transfer of this land, a land transfer agreement from the Port Authority of Las Palmas (APLP) is in force.

The primitive pier of ‘Porto Naos’ will be integrated into the new urban park that "will be part of the five eco boulevards" which, the Arrecife City Council plans.

Yonathan de León has advanced that "from the Department of Public Works of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, directed by councilor Jacobo Medina, the documents are being finalized to tender the drafting of the project for this great park, which will be connected to the Vía Medular".

Also that "this summer it will put out to tender the first of these five eco-boulevards, which will connect the Medular Road, with the Four Corners, through Pérez Galdós Street".
