The Ministry of Universities, Science and Innovation and Culture of the Government of the Canary Islands, through the Canary Agency for Research, Innovation and Information Society (ACIISI), allocates 3,964,000 euros to the two public universities in the Canary Islands through the granting of direct subsidies of 1,982,000 euros each to the University of La Laguna (ULL) and the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC) for the development of actions linked to research, development, and knowledge transfer.
The grants will allow financing initiatives related to research activity, training and consolidation of research personnel, scientific mobility, the development of competitive projects, and the transfer of results to the economic and social environment, in accordance with the priorities defined by both universities.
The Minister of Universities, Science and Innovation and Culture, Migdalia Machín, highlighted that "public universities are fundamental actors for scientific development and knowledge generation in the Canary Islands. With these grants, we contribute to reinforcing lines of work linked to research, the training of research personnel, and the transfer of results to society."
Machín added that "research and innovation are areas in which continuous effort is necessary. These grants favor initiatives developed by our universities that contribute to generating knowledge, training research personnel, and promoting collaboration with the economic and social environment."
In the case of the University of La Laguna, the funding will allow the development of actions aimed at strengthening its research and transfer capabilities through support for R&D projects, participation in competitive initiatives, the promotion of open science, international mobility, and the strengthening of university research institutes.
The action also includes programs aimed at attracting and retaining research talent, including the postdoctoral programs Catalina Ruiz and Viera y Clavijo, as well as actions linked to the valorization of knowledge and support for the creation of companies emerging from the university environment.
For its part, the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria will allocate these resources to the development of actions aimed at strengthening the research career, financing international stays, supporting pre-competitive projects led by researchers in initial and intermediate stages, and reinforcing talent recruitment and consolidation programs.
The funding includes measures aimed at strengthening research trajectories at different stages of the scientific career, including actions directed at predoctoral and postdoctoral staff, in addition to initiatives to increase participation in competitive calls and continue strengthening the university's scientific activity.
These grants are part of the Canary Islands Government's strategy to strengthen the public R&D&I system and support the role played by public universities in knowledge generation, training of highly qualified personnel, and the transfer of research results to society.
