The Minister of Ecological Transition and Energy of the Government of the Canary Islands, Mariano H. Zapata, presented the data on registrations of sustainable vehicles in the Canary Islands, which have experienced a growth of 20.4% in the cumulative period from January to August 2026 compared to the same period in 2025, compared to a decrease of 27.1% in the registration of combustion vehicles.
So far this year, a total of 52,608 electric vehicles have been registered in the Canary Islands, compared to the 47,766 registered in the same period last year.
The data was provided during the presentation of a novel electric racing vehicle which, on the occasion of the recent celebration of World Electric Car Day, will debut next Saturday, September 12 at the Subida a la Cumbre in El Hierro, an island that stands out for being a benchmark in electric mobility.
The Minister of Transition, who was accompanied by the vice-president of the Cabildo of Tenerife, Lope Afonso, as well as the acting president of the Canary Islands Federation of Motorsport (FCA), Miguel Ángel Domínguez, asserted that, as a result of this increase, "the share of ecological vehicles out of the total registrations has gone from 43.0% to 55.5%, an advance of 12.5 points in a single year.
Likewise, Zapata stressed that "in the Canary Islands, the transition to sustainable mobility does not depend solely on public administrations," but, he specified, "we need the involvement of companies, institutions, and associations - such as those accompanying us today -, as well as citizens themselves, which is why the world of sport can be a magnificent ally to convey this message in a close and attractive way, as we are now doing from the Ministry of Transition together with the Canary Islands Federation of Motorsport".
For his part, Miguel Ángel Domínguez detailed some details of the electric vehicle that will debut next weekend at the Subida a la Cumbre in El Hierro. "We are facing a new milestone," he stressed, "in the history of Canarian motorsport because it will be the first time an electric vehicle will compete in an official event and it is doing so at the best time because, as we are seeing, the electrification of the vehicle fleet is a tangible reality and our sport also has to take steps in this direction."
Regarding the vehicle, Miguel A Domínguez specified that it is a vehicle, originally developed for the FIA RX2e Rallycross Championship, it mounts 360 HP of power, 510 Nm of torque, 4x4 traction with two independent motors, 33 kWh battery and tubular chassis with fiber body.
The driver in charge of debuting with the vehicle will be Pablo Suárez, who will get behind the wheel next September 12th in the Subida a la Cumbre.
This initiative joins the "El Cero Más Cero" program, promoted by the Ministry of Transition together with the Canary Islands Federation of Motorsport, which since last November has been using competition as a platform for awareness about the need to accelerate the transition to electric vehicles. It is a campaign that is having a positive effect given the trend shown by the Canary Islands car market, projecting the image of a more aware society about the positive impact of sustainable mobility.
