Manuel Navarro has been elected this Saturday as the new general secretary of UGT Canarias, with his candidacy receiving the support of 98.38% of the valid votes cast in the eighth congress of the union organization.

Navarro was born in La Gomera and is 56 years old. He has a degree in Philosophy and Educational Sciences from the University of La Laguna and has been working as a secondary school teacher for more than 30 years.

In his union career, Manuel Navarro was general secretary of the Federation of Education Workers (FETE) until its integration in 2016 within the Federation of Employees of Public Services, becoming part of the Education sector of said Federation and holding the Deputy General Secretariat in the last Congress.

The different federations and territorial unions wanted to debate to obtain a consensus team, since a period of labor uncertainty marked by the coronavirus crisis is opening, which forces the organization to strengthen itself.

To this end, the team that will lead the union intends to form an integrating project that is updated to the new social needs of the Canary Islands with novel secretariats focused on equality, social policies and environmental policies.

The rest of Manuel Navarro's list will be made up of Francisco González, Deputy General Secretary and Secretary of Union Policy; Héctor Pérez Fajardo, Secretary of Organization, Communication and Institutional Coordination; Antonia Rosa Torres Monzón, Secretary of Administration; Ascensión Inmaculada Dévora Afonso, Secretary of Training and Employment; Águeda Victoria Francisco González; Secretary of Prevention and Occupational Health; Rosa Mirna Ortega Chavaldas, Secretary of Equality, and Agustín Melián, Secretary of Environmental Action.

Manuel Navarro, already as the new general secretary of the organization, will visit the Arguineguín pier this afternoon together with Pepe Álvarez, general secretary of UGT, to learn first-hand about the reality of the migrants crowded in what is now known as the 'camp of shame'.
