PLACED ON LINES THAT RUN THROUGH FIVE AREAS OF THE ISLAND

Endesa has installed, between 2011 and 2014, reflective beacons for bird protection along just over 19 kilometers on medium-voltage lines in Lanzarote. This year, they have been placed on lines that run through five areas: Playa Blanca, Playa Honda, Teseguite, Caleta de Famara and between Muñique and Soo.

This action, in which Endesa has already invested nearly 250,000 euros, has been carried out in coordination with experts from the Spanish Ornithological Society (SEO/BirdLife), with which Endesa signed a collaboration agreement in 2010 to evaluate the effectiveness of signaling and monitoring measures on medium-voltage lines in bird flyover areas.

Lanzarote was a pioneer in the installation of this type of beacon in Spain, being "a living laboratory to test its effectiveness in preventing bird collisions", according to Endesa. This system has a rotating device that reflects sunlight during the day, producing a "spark effect", so that it can be seen by birds, allowing them to change their flight and avoid collisions.

The beacon band also has luminescent materials, which glow in the dark, allowing birds to see them in the absence of natural light and in conditions of poor environmental visibility.
