Canary Islands is on the list of Spanish autonomous communities that have not recovered competitiveness after the pandemic, according to data from the Regional Competitiveness Report in Spain 2022, prepared by the General Council of Economists of Spain.

Although eleven national regions have achieved data in 2021 similar to those achieved in 2019, as is the case of the Community of Madrid (which leads the list of national competitiveness with 15.12 points), Navarra (12.78) and the Basque Country (12.68), the archipelago is at the bottom, with 5.54 points.

Below the islands, only Andalusia (5.39 points) and Extremadura (5.16) are located.

Gap of more than 50% in GDP and R&D

The gaps between the different autonomous communities are observed when framing the regions in the European context. In relation to GDP per capita, the Canary Islands, together with Castilla-La Mancha and the Region of Murcia, make up the group of the worst situated, with levels below 70% of the European average.

The same scheme is repeated with respect to spending on R&D, where the gap in the islands is greater than 65% compared to European data.
