The Canary Islands is at the bottom of the national ranking in cultural consumption. This is according to data presented in the Yearbook of the General Society of Authors and Publishers (SGAE) 2022, which shows that in the performing arts sector, although the community registers increases of 38.9% in the number of performances, 48.8% in attendance and 47.7% in revenue, in the whole of Spain there were increases of 42.2% in the number of performances, 65.8% in the audience and 61.8% in revenue.

However, this difference in consumption is not as significant compared to the previous data of the pandemic: when comparing the data of 2019 with those of 2021, the decline in supply is 27.7%, a loss of spectators of 63.7% and a decrease in revenue of 61.8%.

On the other hand, with regard to the activity of popular music concerts and festivals, although in 2021 there were increases of 36.5% in supply, 44.7% in attendance and 19.9% in revenue compared to 2020, these data are again lower than the national average: increase in the number of concerts of 40%, 59.4% in attendance and 49.5% in revenue.

The comparison of the data from 2021 with those from 2019 shows decreases of 21% in the number of concerts, 55.4% in the number of spectators and 59% in revenue, data similar to those of the national average.

Cinema, radio and television

According to the SGAE, in the consumption of cinema, radio and television, although during 2021 in comparison with 2020 the number of cinema sessions grew by 32%, the audience by 42.2% and the revenue was 43.7% higher, the data are still lower than the state average, so it concludes that in the Canary Islands it is difficult to recover the data prior to the pandemic, since the archipelago stood out almost eight points above the national average in number of sessions, audience and revenue.

Regarding the average television consumption per person per day in the Canary Islands, during 2021 it reaches 200 minutes, which implies a decrease of 20 minutes in relation to the previous year and is five minutes lower than the state average.

Radio consumption in 2021 has also decreased, as in the rest of Spain, in this case specifically, 10 minutes, reaching a total of 86 minutes per person per day. With this decrease, it is six minutes below the Spanish average.
