Air Europa will be the first Spanish company to implement and put into service across its entire fleet a set of advanced medical support solutions that “guarantee having the assessment of healthcare professionals in emergency situations”.
To do this, it has established a strategic alliance with MedAire, a leading provider for the aviation industry of security services and medical assistance, whereby, since last March, all its flights benefit from the most advanced technology in this field, as well as the knowledge accumulated over the more than four decades that this provider has been serving crews worldwide.
The project significantly expands reaction capabilities in emergency cases. Air Europa and, progressively, Air Europa Express, will have systems of efficient prevention and intervention, both before boarding the plane as well as during the trip.
From now on, ground staff can use MedAire's Passenger Fit-to-Fly digital tool to evaluate passengers who appear to be unwell or who may have recently suffered a medical incident, such as a hospitalization or a surgical intervention.
Determine if a passenger is exposed to a greater risk when traveling
With the support of healthcare professionals, the solution helps to determine if a passenger is exposed to a greater risk when traveling, which could prevent serious medical incidents during the flight.
All the above contributes to further improving the service and comprehensive safety on board, which is why Air Europa has just been recognized as the first European company to receive the prestigious Seven Star PLUS certification from AirlineRatings.com.
Crews already receive recurrent training in first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation, which enables them to deploy the necessary procedures to attend to passengers in any situation. This includes from stabilizing a sick person and performing clinical assessments to making operational decisions according to the previous information. Likewise, they have on board first aid kits, medical kits, automatic external defibrillators, and a rapid response team that, added to the new solutions, allow them to act with total safety in complex scenarios where intervening in the shortest possible time is key.
“We continuously work to guarantee the maximum safety of our passengers, and having the capacity to give a quick, precise, and efficient response, especially in mid-flight, is part of it. Deploying these solutions reinforces the solid preparation of our crews and provides even more peace of mind to the traveler, since we now have the direct support of professionals accustomed to facing any emergency situation. Furthermore, the fact that we are the only Spanish company capable of providing these services demonstrates our spirit of continuous improvement”, explains Iván Gutiérrez, Operations Director of Air Europa.
"Air Europa crews will now have access to the same proven medical assistance ecosystem trusted by more than 300,000 crew members worldwide," says Peter Tuggey, general manager of MedAire for Europe, Middle East, Africa, and Asia-Pacific. "What makes these tools so effective is not only the speed with which expert assistance is accessed, but also the depth of operational knowledge behind them.
The application MedAire In-Flight guides the crew through structured onboard evaluations based on more than one million real aviation medical cases, while MedLink connects them in real time with emergency physicians who can evaluate that same information and help guide care and operational decisions.
With the future incorporation of the 12-lead clinical quality electrocardiogram function, Air Europa will take another important step forward in strengthening the onboard cardiac response".
