The first farm in the Canary Islands disconnected from the electricity grid and powered one hundred percent by renewable energy is Granja Avícola Morales and it is in Lanzarote. This company is ahead of the Europe 2020 objectives and far exceeds them, since it has managed to implement the first industry in the Canary Islands of this magnitude that generates zero emissions, compared to the twenty percent reduction proposed by Europe.
It especially highlights the 124 tons of CO2 that it stops emitting annually with its activity, for which 6,000 trees would be needed if we had to absorb all that pollution. The project is called Conecta Tierra and has 208 solar panels, installed on the roof of the farm, which has been replaced by one much more efficient than usual. The energy is stored in batteries and all the excess is used to power the electric and sustainable mobile fleet, which the company is progressively incorporating for its logistics and the mobility of its employees. In addition, the entire project has been executed with local companies to promote the circular economy and bet on local employment.
A regional aspiration
But Granja Avícola Morales not only operates in Lanzarote, since it is a regionalized company with more than 32 direct employees and with facilities in Gran Canaria, Tenerife and Fuerteventura. This family business has more than 50 years of experience and its forecast is to continue expanding this efficient and renewable model to all its facilities in the Archipelago.
"The freshest and cleanest eggs on the market"
For the moment, in its first zero-emission farm, it will have 32,000 hens raised on the ground, to adapt to the new consumer who demands free-range eggs and raised with more space, but they plan to continue expanding in the coming year. The use and recovery of native plants as food is another milestone in reducing the carbon footprint. The brand, which has a European CRAE Certificate, ISO 9001 and 14001 certificates, is already a benchmark in the Canary Islands and aspires to serve the freshest and cleanest eggs on the market.
The packaging has also experienced a notable improvement. The cases come from recycled and biodegradable cellulose, totally ecological. The handling area has natural light, as another energy saving measure, since the first renewable energy is the one that is not consumed.
This is a pioneering project of great magnitude, circular, completely sustainable and exemplary for other companies in the Archipelago. A commitment that responds to a responsible consumer, who chooses socially responsible, ecological and zero kilometer products.
Didactic classroom to expand the project
All this can be seen and visited in a didactic classroom where it will be explained how the farm works, so that other companies, professionals, students and curious people can learn about the Avícola Morales model.
Granja Avícola Morales participates in the Comprehensive Solutions Plan for Companies 'Cámara Solution' of the Chamber of Commerce of Lanzarote and La Graciosa.
