A woman has been arrested in San Bartolomé de Tirajana, in the south of Gran Canaria, after aborting and abandoning the fetus in a hospital in that town, the National Police confirmed to Efe this Monday.
Agents of that force located and arrested her on Sunday at the healthcare center itself, the San Roque Meloneras hospital, after receiving an alert about what had happened, the Superior Headquarters of the Police of the Canary Islands confirmed, specifying that it has not yet been clarified how many weeks pregnant the fetus was and that the case has been declared secret, therefore it is not possible to provide further details.
Consequently, they have not clarified whether or not data published by the island newspaper La Provincia, which reported this event, has been confirmed, such as that the detainee could have drug addiction problems and that, apparently, she stated that she had given birth to the baby alive in a hospital bathroom, where she would have been found by an employee, according to the newspaper's version.
Which adds that she is a Spanish national, 31 years old, who claimed to be unaware she was pregnant, despite being almost at the end of her gestation, and that she went to the center because she felt unwell, eventually going to a bathroom where she finally abandoned the fetus.
