The teenager hospitalized this morning in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria after a young man allegedly doused her with flammable material and set her on fire, is a 17-year-old minor under the guardianship of the Government of the Canary Islands, who had fled from the center where she resided.
The general director of Child Protection of the autonomous community, Sandra Rodríguez, has confirmed to EFE that the children's home where she resided had reported her disappearance days ago and "just yesterday" had made another search request.
The Government of the Canary Islands has no formal record that the young man arrested for the attack - 20 years old and of Moroccan nationality - was her partner, but they have received some comments suggesting that he was, although they are still handling them with caution.
In fact, the Canarian Institute of Equality, which is monitoring these cases, has not been able to corroborate it at the moment either.
Investigation sources have explained to EFE that the Police also do not confirm the hypothesis of gender violence and that the participation of at least one other person in the events is being investigated.
In any case, Sandra Rodríguez recalls that, in the eyes of the legislation of the Canary Islands, whether they were a couple or not, it is an aggression of gender violence, with "the plus" in this case that the victim was especially vulnerable, a minor under guardianship.
The young woman has been admitted in critical condition to the Doctor Negrín Hospital in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria with burns on 95% of her body after receiving first aid in the street in the La Isleta neighborhood where the events took place, around 4:00 a.m. this morning.
Given her state of health, it has not yet been possible to take a statement from the victim, who has just been transferred to the Burns Unit in Seville.
The detainee remains in the Doctor Negrín Hospital affected by smoke inhalation.
