The Minister of Youth and Childhood of the Government of Spain, Sira Rego, has called for a "general" reflection on what happened this Wednesday in La Restinga (El Hierro), where seven people have died when a canoe capsized, and the need for Europe to open legal and safe routes so that no one has to risk their lives to reach European territory.
Rego was scheduled to meet this Wednesday with members of Civil Protection and Corazón Naranja who work in the management of the migratory crisis, although she has approached the dock of La Restinga to convey her solidarity to the emergency teams that have worked in the rescue after the event, which has caused the death of four women and three girls.
"There must be a migratory policy in Europe, in general terms, different, that ensures legal and safe routes so that people do not have to risk their lives reaching any territory. It is a question that is perfectly possible and I think it is worth reflecting on all this," said Rego, who has asked to "put at the center" solidarity with the Canary Islands.
The minister thanked the population, authorities and professionals for their behavior and said that they have the commitment of the Government of Spain to give an exit and resolve those points "that have to be resolved."
"In the case that concerns me, everything that has to do with unaccompanied boys and girls. We have the firm determination to give a binding and supportive reception to all boys and girls," stressed the minister, who recalled that the migrants who arrive are human beings "with very hard stories behind them."
Rego added that they are in full development of the Royal Decree of the modification of article 35 of the Immigration Law for the distribution of unaccompanied migrant boys and girls, and added that in the next sectoral of Childhood the reception criteria will be finalized.
She has thus asked to reflect from humanity, solidarity, the defense of human rights and from the vision of different reception policies. "This tragedy unfortunately puts it back in the center of the public debate," she asserted.
