Six people have died, including a five-year-old girl, and a baby has disappeared when a canoe with around 160 people on board capsized in the port of La Restinga (El Hierro), when its occupants were about to disembark, as confirmed by the Government Delegation
The number of victims at the moment is still provisional, because the boat and the area of the shipwreck are still being checked in case there are any more victims, the president of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, said on the dock, who was this Thursday in El Hierro and went to the port as soon as he learned of the tragedy.
In addition, two other people have been transferred in very serious condition to the island's hospital. They are a "very young" man and woman, according to the Government Delegation.
The canoe capsized as it approached a Maritime Rescue boat already docked to stand alongside it. At that moment, several of its occupants stood up and tried to jump and the canoe capsized.
