Reports of gender violence registered in the judicial bodies of the Canary Islands during the second quarter of 2025 increased by 44.6% compared to the same period in 2024. While last spring the courts of the islands had registered 2,767 reports of gender violence, this year the number was 4,001 (1,234 more), according to data released today by the Observatory against Domestic and Gender Violence of the General Council of the Judiciary.

According to the report from the governing body of judges, and consistent with the previous data, the number of women victims of gender violence in the Canary Islands increased between April and June of this year compared to the same period in 2024. It went from 2,621 to 3,817, 1,196 more, a percentage increase of 46.6%.

According to official data, the Canary Islands recorded a rate of 33.7 women victims of gender violence per 10,000 women during the second quarter of this year, the highest in the country, 6.1 points above the second highest, the Balearic Islands (27.6), and 14.5 points above the national average, 19.2 in the analyzed period. The community with the lowest rate was Castilla y León (11.9).

96% of cases ended in temporary dismissal

The Observatory's report offers more data: of the 3,817 women victims of violence in the Canary Islands during the study period, 2,302 were Spanish and 1,515 were foreign. 412 of the victims availed themselves during the processing of the case of the dispensation from the obligation to testify against their alleged aggressor, 20.8% more than in the second quarter of the previous year, when 341 women had not confirmed the complaints.

During last spring, the Canary Islands judicial bodies that judged cases of gender violence issued 715 convictions (16% less than in the second quarter of 2024), 38 acquittals (20.8% less than the previous year), 99 free dismissal orders (-26.1%) and 2,412 provisional dismissal orders of proceedings (+174.1%). The percentage of convictions was 95% (+0.2%) and that of termination by provisional dismissal was 96.1% (10.7% more than the previous year).

Regarding prosecuted individuals, last spring 754 people sat in the dock in the Canary Islands for male chauvinist crimes (16.3% less than in the second quarter of 2024), with 95% being convicted (0.4% more than in 2024). 521 were Spanish citizens and 195 were foreigners.

Regarding protection orders, the Canary Islands courts registered 567 requests this winter, 20.1% more than in 2024. Of these, the courts rejected 10, adopted 408 (11.5% more than in 2024), and denied 149 (+40.3).

For the fifth year, the Observatory's study offers data broken down by island. Between April and June 2025, 156 reports of crimes of violence against women were registered in Fuerteventura; 1,360 in Gran Canaria; 180 in Lanzarote; 6 in El Hierro; 16 in La Gomera; 60 in La Palma, and 2,636 in Tenerife. In the vast majority of cases, crimes of injury and mistreatment were reported.

National data

With regard to national data, the courts specializing in gender violence registered 51,897 complaints during the second quarter of this year and attended to a total of 47,710 victims, figures that reflect an increase of 2.69% and 3.41% respectively, in relation to the same period of 2024. Twelve out of every hundred women victims of this type of crime (11.63%) invoked their right not to testify.

The "Quarterly Report on Gender Violence," prepared by the Statistical Service of the General Council of the Judiciary for the Observatory against Domestic and Gender Violence, also shows that the number of protection orders requested and granted between March and June of this year remained at figures very similar to those of a year ago.

Thus, the courts for violence against women and the on-call courts registered 12,661 requests (0.10% less) and granted 8,571 protection orders (0.20% less). The percentage of those granted with respect to those requested has remained at 67.7 percent, the same as in the second quarter of 2024.

Regarding the number of judgments handed down by the courts for violence against women, criminal courts, and provincial courts, it amounted to 16,206, of which 82.58% were convictions.

More complaints and more victims

During the second quarter of 2025, the courts for gender violence throughout Spain received a total of 51,897 complaints, 2.69% more than in the same period of the previous year, in which 50,536 complaints were registered. The number of women victims of gender violence was 47,710, 3.41% more than a year ago, when a total of 46,135 were counted.

For another quarter, two out of three victims (61.66%) are of Spanish nationality, while the remaining 38.34% come from other countries. The number of minor victims, sons and daughters under the guardianship, care, or custody of the female victim was 105(*), 25% less than that recorded in the same quarter of 2024, during which 141 minors were counted.

The percentages of complaints filed based on who the complainant was showed minimal year-on-year variations during the quarter analyzed. Thus, once again, in two out of three cases (36,747, 70.81%), the complaints were filed by the victim themselves, either in court or at the police station.

The reports filed by the victim's circle were again much lower in number (994). Although the figure represents a slight increase in these reports compared to the second quarter of 2024, they barely reached 1.91% of the total submitted. Between March and June 2025, those derived directly from police reports increased slightly (8,865), representing 17.08% of the total.

Those originating from injuries received in court totaled 3,705 (7.14%), while those filed by third parties totaled 1,586 and represented 3.06% of the total.
