The Civic Front against Pedophilia in the Canary Islands has made public a letter to Pope Leo XIV, on the occasion of his upcoming visit to the islands, in which it asks him to act directly and immediately against the inaction and silence that it attributes to the Spanish bishops in the face of sexual abuse of minors in the Church.

The coordinator of the collective, Abel Román, has framed this letter within the defense of the 14,994 Spanish priests who do an "extraordinary" job and who feel ashamed by the inaction of the bishops.

The platform has accused the ecclesiastical hierarchy of not setting an example and has criticized that, in the face of complaints from affected parishioners, those responsible choose to ignore the cases or transfer the priests involved to other locations.

According to the citizen entity, this practice allows the aggressor to continue offending in their new parish and aggravates the suffering of the victims, which lasts throughout their lives.

The Civic Front acknowledges that pedophilia in the Church environment represents a smaller percentage compared to the 80% that is concentrated in the family environment, but has warned about the "enormous" social and moral scandal that these crimes imply.

The collective assures that the fear of facing subsidiary civil responsibilities and economic compensation is the main motivation that prevents bishops from attacking this human drama with "sincerity and responsibility".
