The MEP and candidate of the PSOE for the Canary Islands to the European Parliament in the elections of June 9, Juan Fernando López Aguilar, visited this Monday [27] the House Museum of José Saramago, in Lanzarote, where he gave the island as an example as a "reflection" of the social Europe defended by socialists, focused on environmental sustainability, renewable energies and the defense of access to housing by all citizens.

López Aguilar highlighted the work and personal life of the Nobel Prize winner for Literature, José Saramago, whom he admires and met personally, and of whom he highlighted his struggle for the just causes of humanity, which are now "at stake" in the elections to the European Parliament. "These just causes go through the polls on June 9."

The socialist candidate insisted on the example of sustainability that Lanzarote is, and on the model that it has become as a commitment to renewable energies, highlighting the effects that funds from Europe have had to achieve these objectives.

In addition, he emphasized another of the pillars of the socialists in Europe that also affects Lanzarote and the Canary Islands, such as social housing. "We also want to incorporate into the pillar of social Europe the defense of the public park for rent or purchase of homes, so that many people who work, for example, in Lanzarote, do not have to be excluded from their right to reside where they work."

In this sense, he advocated including young people, who, in his opinion, "are being prohibited from becoming independent as a result of the lack of control of the tourism sector, which also demands that the Government of the Canary Islands exercise its competence and comply with the State Housing Law and the declaration of stressed areas."

For the MEP, the socialists are talking in this election campaign about the major European issues that interest citizens, such as the green and fair transition; aid to the primary sector, renewable energies and housing. "These are issues incorporated into our agenda of social Europe and that are decided in the European Parliament."

López Aguilar insisted on the PSOE's defense of this social agenda in the midst of a world "increasingly convulsive, more violent and increasingly troubled by thugs or gangster neighbors, as is the case of Putin in his aggression against Ukraine, and the disproportionate retaliation of the Israeli military offensive in Gaza, which is taking so many innocent lives and so many children that move us."

"While that is there, the socialists have a reason to show our faces and carry out a very intense, very determined campaign throughout the islands and call for a vote on June 9. That is what the PSOE is doing, while the Popular Party is tiresome to the point of nausea, all day trying to shorten the legislature of Spain and the Government presided over by Pedro Sánchez. That is their only interest, they have no proposal for Europe. In fact, they have no proposal for Spain. The only one is to shorten the legislature," he warned.

In his opinion, the PP is once again "bellowing" against the amnesty, when they did not dare to talk about it at the time when it was appropriate, which was in the campaign for the elections in Catalonia. "In the Catalan elections they did not say a word. Do you know why? Because they know that we are right. Because they know that the socialists are right when we bet on coexistence and reconciliation, when we bet on rebuilding bridges that they destroyed, when we bet on making a Catalonia with all the Catalans possible again, that they continue to be part of Spain, part of a shared project, of a shared country."

López Aguilar added that the populars have no proposal for Catalonia or for the rest of Spain or for Europe. "The only obsession they have is to shorten the legislature of the Government presided over by Pedro Sánchez. We socialists are going to be a Europe of the future. A sustainable Europe, of a green and fair transition, with an agricultural policy that helps producers and distributes aid equitably, with simplification of the bureaucratic and administrative burdens that have generated movements throughout Europe and that have been heard."

"The social Europe that we socialists defend is the option that anyone who wants to vote for their European citizenship has on June 9. There is no other."
