The Deputy Minister of Justice of the Government of the Canary Islands, Cesáreo Rodríguez, has informed the Deputy of the Common, Rafael Yanes, that in the coming days the special computer required by the orthopantomograph acquired by the Government of the Canary Islands to determine the age of migrant minors will arrive.

The orthopantomograph is a radiological equipment that allows obtaining a general image of the jaws, the mandible and the teeth and is used as one of the means, but not the only one, to determine the age at the request of the Prosecutor's Office, when it is doubtful or inconsistent with the appearance or the data provided by the alleged minor.

Rodríguez explained to the Deputy of the Common, in a meeting held this Monday following the announcement by Rafael Yanes that he would open an ex officio action to find out if the orthopantomograph was going to be launched soon, that the device was acquired on November 9, 2023 and arrived at the facilities of the Institute of Legal Medicine (IML) of Santa Cruz de Tenerife on January 24.

He also informed him that, according to the forecasts of the supplying company, the special computer required for its start-up will arrive over the next few days, details the Government of the Canary Islands in a statement.

In addition, the Deputy Minister of Justice has announced that the tender for a second device for the IML of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is being processed.

Cesáreo Rodríguez pledged to Rafael Yanes to make himself available "to clarify any kind of doubt that may arise in the future regarding this matter", the note indicates.

"From the Ministry of the Presidency we are trying to collaborate to respond to this unexpected situation that is requiring an unprecedented effort from the Government of the Canary Islands", adds Rodríguez in the statement.
