A hammerhead shark has been "strolling" this Wednesday along the coast of Puerto del Carmen. The animal, about 3 meters long, was about 400 meters from the shore in front of the Fariones hotel.
Jesús Fernández Sivera recorded the moment. "We saw it around 4:00 p.m. on a jet ski and that's what allowed us to get so close without it getting scared," he explained to La Voz.
The hammerhead, as it is also known, belongs to the Sphyrnidae family. It is dark gray or brownish on the back and white on the ventral area. The head of this shark is hammer-shaped, hence its name, with a notch in the center. Its body is elongated and spindle-shaped. It lives in all temperate and tropical waters of the world, including the coasts of the Canary Islands.
