A reader has contacted La Voz to denounce the garbage collection situation in Playa Blanca which, he says, "has reached alarming levels, highlighting the inaction of the Yaiza City Council in the face of a problem that seriously affects both the quality of life of the residents and the tourist image of the town."
"Under a specification that has been deserted and without observing significant improvements in years, the waste collection service is clearly overwhelmed. This occurs despite the notable increase in hotel, vacation and residential capacity in the area," he says.
The garbage deposit points, in which domestic and industrial waste are mixed, are reduced to four locations: the church area (Calle Las Maretas), the soccer field area (Calle El Puestito), the Playa Blanca dock area (behind Avda. Canarias) and El Palangre street intersection with Calle El Comedero (most central area).
"Special mention should be made of the point located at the intersection of El Palangre and El Comedero streets. Despite being one of the busiest areas for tourists, residents and local authorities, the accumulation of waste in this place generates the proliferation of rodents, insects and other animals attracted by organic waste, mainly from nearby restaurants and bars," he indicates.
"In this area, where up to 20 containers are concentrated, the situation is especially critical due to the uncontrolled accumulation of glass. The deposits made by hoteliers, often after midnight, cause noises that affect the rest of the residents, with activities being recorded until two in the morning," he continues.
"Formal complaints submitted in writing to the Yaiza City Council have been systematically ignored, while the problem persists and worsens over time. It is unfortunate that neither the current government group nor previous administrations have taken effective measures to resolve an issue that threatens health and coexistence," he states.
"The abandonment of the garbage collection service not only affects the residents, who deserve to live in a clean and healthy environment, but also deteriorates the tourist image of Playa Blanca, a destination that should be up to the standards of quality expected of a municipality like Yaiza," he says.
"We demand an immediate solution that involves a review and improvement of the waste collection specifications, the expansion of deposit points, strategically distributed, the implementation of measures to minimize inconvenience, such as the regulation of hours for the deposit of glass and adequate supervision that guarantees the hygiene and maintenance of the affected areas," he concludes.
