The good thing about Lanzarote is that it is the perfect place for those surfers who are starting in this sport, but also for those more experienced who are looking for challenges. Below are some of the most famous spots depending on your level.
1. Famara
Famara is the quintessential place to practice surfing in Lanzarote, and not only because of its movie-like location, with a golden sand beach of more than six kilometers guarded by the imposing Risco de Famara, but because it is made for surfers of all levels.
Beginners usually take to the water in the central area of the beach, as it is the safest area due to its sandy bottom. In addition, this is where the different surf schools usually give their classes.
For their part, more experienced surfers have a wider range of possibilities, such as the Codito spot, which has a sandy bottom with the occasional rock. Then there is the pier area, whose difficulty lies in its rocky bottom, as well as its access.
Finally, San Juan could be crowned the most complicated place in the area, thanks to its fast wave that breaks hard on the rocks. In addition, professional championships are also held in this spot.
2. La Santa
In La Santa, a fishing village with strong waves and rocks south of Famara, there are also several spots for surfing almost every day of the year, although it is only suitable for the most expert athletes.
Specifically, its left is one of the most sought-after waves by surfers from all over the world, thanks to its short wave that ends up breaking on both sides, all over a volcanic reef.
On the other hand, if you are looking for a more consistent wave and you are an expert, the perfect wave is the right of La Santa, although for more professional surfers, the most visited wave is El Quemao, with hollow and very strong tubes that open on both sides. In addition, one of the most famous championships in the world is held here.
Finally, for those intermediate-level surfers who want to venture into this area, they also have the option of launching themselves through the centrito, with longer and simpler waves that will allow them to practice many movements.
3. La Garita
In Arrieta, northeast of Lanzarote, a good wave also forms, more accessible to any tourist or beginner, specifically at La Garita beach.
This dark sand beach with crystal clear water has a fast right-hander that breaks right from the central area and another that breaks from right to left from under the bridge. It is a good place to learn to surf.
4. La Graciosa
On the island of La Graciosa, north of Lanzarote, there are also a few good surf spots, although it is important to mention that these are places not recommended for beginners, due to the characteristics of the waves. There are also no surf schools that can help you learn this sport.
One of the most accessible spots is La Francesa beach, where a long right-hander breaks and the wind is practically onshore. You can also try surfing at Montaña Amarilla, southwest of the island, with a fast left-hander, although as it is a rather sheltered spot, there are not always guarantees of waves. In any case, it is a good place to spend the day.
