The 7 places to see the best sunsets in Lanzarote

One of the great attractions of the island of Lanzarote are its incredible sunsets, whether from black sand beaches, cliffs over 400 meters high, or from the avenue of the capital itself.

All sunsets vary depending on the area, acquiring more reddish, pinkish, or orange tones, but all equally worth seeing. Below are seven places in Lanzarote to see the best sunsets.

1. Montaña Bermeja Beach

Located opposite the Montaña Bermeja volcano, from which it gets its name, and a small pond, this black gravel beach has one of the best sunsets on the island and tends to be less frequented by tourists.

Montaña Bermeja beach reflects a very different landscape from conventional beaches, with a contrast between the dark color of the sand, the blue of the sea, and the red of the mountain.

To get there, you have to follow a small path not far from the road and the parking lot, where you can leave the car. It is important to mention that it is more of a transit point, as it is not suitable for swimming, due to its strong currents.

2. Mirador Risco de Famara

If you prefer to watch the sunsets from above, you can do so from the Mirador del Risco de Famara, at over 400 meters.

To get there you will have to follow the road that goes towards the Haría viewpoint and once you are a few meters away, turn left onto a dirt track. After about 5 minutes driving you will see a sign that says "Bosquecillo to the right", you should ignore it and continue straight.

Then you will reach the edge of the Risco, from where you can enjoy a wonderful sunset over Famara beach, with numerous volcanoes in the background. If there are one or two clouds, you will see an unparalleled sight, as they tend to go up and down the cliff, sometimes creating a sea of clouds.

3. Famara Beach

Below the Risco de Famara is a beach with the same name, a place frequented by surfers for its waves, but also by numerous tourists who go to enjoy a sunset with the sound of the sea in the background.

Its six kilometers of golden sand make it a beach perfect for long walks as the sun sets on the horizon. However, it tends to be a very windy place, so it is essential to check the weather forecast to avoid getting covered in sand.

4. Papagayo Beaches

The Papagayo beaches are the most famous in Lanzarote, thanks to their golden sand, their numerous coves and their turquoise water, but also for their incredible sunsets. 

Located in the south of the island, in the municipality of Yaiza, these virgin beaches are part of the Los Ajaches Natural Park, so they are a protected area in themselves. To get to them you will have to drive along a dirt road full of stones and potholes, so it is advisable to drive slowly during the journey.

Access to Papagayo costs 3 euros, so the ideal is to go spend the day at the beach and stay to watch the sunset. However, if you go around seven or eight in the evening, you probably won't find anyone there to charge you the entrance fee, so you can enter for free to watch the sun go down.

5. Charco de San Ginés

The Charco de San Ginés is the heart of the old town of Arrecife, an ideal place to watch a sunset with a beer in hand, as the sky tends to be tinged with pink and orange hues.

It is a promenade with numerous bars, restaurants, and ice cream parlors that comes alive, especially at night. In the center, there is a huge pool of seawater, with small fishing boats, which have become the perfect postcard image of the capital.

6. Guacimeta Beach

Guacimeta beach, located opposite Playa Honda Avenue, is characterized by its kilometers of sand and its calm waters, but also by bordering a unique area, Lanzarote's César Manrique Airport.

Every day, dozens of tourists come to this area to witness how planes pass just 100 meters above their heads and, incidentally, take some photos for souvenirs. A scene that leaves you speechless at sunset, as the sky usually takes on pink hues that blend with the blue color.

To get here, just follow Playa Honda Avenue walking towards the airport. While you wait for a plane to arrive, you can always take a dip.

7. Arrecife Gran Hotel & Spa in Arrecife

For those who prefer to watch a sunset from above, but with a coffee or a soft drink in hand, and without getting cold, they can do so from the Arrecife Gran Hotel & Spa.

The restaurant and cafeteria, located on one of the top floors of the building, offer wonderful views of Reducto beach, which are even better with the sunsets, as the sky turns orange in that area. In addition, you can also take the opportunity to take a walk along El Reducto beach and continue along the seafront avenue.
