The island of La Graciosa, recognized as the eighth Canary Island in 2018, is a practically virgin place, without roads, with very few buildings and cars, one of the few places where the mass tourism typical of tourist spots in Spain has not yet arrived.
The golden beaches and turquoise waters of this protected area invite relaxation and disconnection in just 29 square kilometers. Its little more than 700 registered inhabitants reside in two small urban centers called Pedro Barba and Caleta de Sebo, the latter concentrating the bulk of restaurants, accommodations, and establishments.
As it does not have an airport, and is separated by a strip of water known as El Río, the only way to get there is by boat from the north of the island of Lanzarote. Ferries depart daily, every 30 minutes, from the town of Órzola to the pier of Caleta de Sebo, a journey that lasts just half an hour and can be quite "bumpy" on days with higher waves.
Specifically, the family company Líneas Romero stands out for being the first to connect Lanzarote with La Graciosa, a task it has been doing since 1930. In addition, it also has connections to the neighboring island of Fuerteventura, as well as leisure excursions on catamarans.
Ticket prices
The ticket price is 26 euros round trip for non-resident adults, while children pay half, 13 euros, and can be purchased both at the Órzola pier and online.
The key is to buy the ticket for both journeys to save money, as otherwise the price goes up to 14 euros for adults per trip and 7 for children.
In the event that the buyer is a Canary Islands resident, they will enjoy a 75% discount. Furthermore, it is important to mention that you do not have to return at a specific time if you buy a round-trip ticket, as the return is open, however, you must always return with the same ferry company.
Departure and return times to La Graciosa
Boats depart from Órzola from 8:00 AM to 7:30 PM and, during the high summer season, from June 1st to October 29th, there is a last boat at 8:00 PM.
In the opposite direction, trips run from 07:00 in the morning to 18:30 in the afternoon and, in the months of June, July, August, September and October, until 19:00. There is always a break in the central hours of the day, around lunchtime.
During the boat trip, you can enjoy the immensity of the Risco de Famara and some of the islets that make up the Chinijo archipelago, of which La Graciosa is also a part. This peculiar group north of Lanzarote is formed by the islets Roque del Este, Roque del Oeste, Montaña Clara and Alegranza, also constituting the largest marine reserve in Europe.
Organized catamaran tour
Another option to visit La Graciosa is to book a catamaran excursion through the company Líneas Romero, which usually includes transport from the hotel to the port, the boat ticket, and several stops at the island's most famous beaches, such as La Francesa or Montaña Amarilla.
They also offer food and drink included on board, as well as equipment for water activities, such as snorkeling gear.
The schedule and price per person will depend on the company with which the excursion is booked, but it usually ranges between 60 and 65 euros.
