The waters of southern Lanzarote hosted this Saturday the XVI Travesía Playas de Papagayo – Grand Hyatt Lanzarote Playa Dorada, a record-breaking edition in which 450 participants enjoyed a spectacular open water swimming day.
From early in the morning, swimmers gathered at the Marina Rubicón port, in Playa Blanca, to take the Líneas Romero boat towards the start of the 4.5 kilometers, a distance counting towards the Canary Islands Open Water Cup. At 10:20 AM, the start was given in front of the Papagayo beaches, beginning an exciting crossing to Playa Dorada, where the first finishers arrived in less than an hour.
In the wetsuit category, Tomás Carrascosa topped the men's podium, followed by Raúl Fernández and Raúl Toral. In the women's category, Nicole Molini achieved victory, accompanied by Sarah Bonner and Silvia Gopar. In the non-wetsuit classification, Adrián Reino won ahead of Borja Estrada and Arnaldo Domínguez, while in the women's division, Marta Armas won, followed by Sybille Bouchet and Laura García.
At 12:20 PM, it was the turn of the Lanzarote Open Water Cup, which celebrated its final stage of the season. The first to start were the participants of the 1,200 meters, where Diego Vázquez won ahead of Besay Delgado and Nicolás Padrón. In the women's category, the victory went to Nora Delgado, followed by Adara González and Jimena Martín. In this distance, the participation of Andrés Martín in the adapted swimming category is noteworthy.
Subsequently, the 800 meters were contested, with victories by Aarón Mederos and Andrea Fraga, and the 400 meters, where Alexander Delgado and Dana Sandoval won.
The inclusive category was once again one of the main protagonists of the day, with swimmers from different associations in Lanzarote tackling the various distances of the circuit and receiving recognition and applause from the public. This is another demonstration of the event's commitment to inclusion through sport.
The 3x200 meter relays, with eight participating teams, brought the competition to a close with a victory for Los Petisuis, followed by Mojopicón and NBA. The rest of the classifications can be consulted at www.tripasioneventos.com.
The activity in the water concluded with a spectacular artistic swimming exhibition by the Club Pingüinos of the Real Club Náutico de Arrecife, whose members offered a great performance in the sea, a different setting from the usual pool, putting the finishing touch to the sports day.
The day then moved to the terrace of the Hotel Grand Hyatt Lanzarote Playa Dorada, where the trophy presentation was held with the presence of the Councilor for Sports of Yaiza, Ángel Lago, representatives of the hotel and the organization.
In parallel, the traditional solidarity lunch took place for the benefit of ALANEM, which once again exceeded expectations, closing an edition to remember for its participation, sportsmanship, and inclusive and solidarity character.
The event was sponsored by the Yaiza City Council, Cabildo de Lanzarote, CACT, Turismo Lanzarote, Tripasión Eventos, and Hotel Grand Hyatt Lanzarote. Líneas Romero, Marina Rubicón, Bar Snack Playa Dorada, Hotel Sandos Papagayo, Yaizart.es, Fundación ”la Caixa”, Federación Canaria de Natación, Libby's, and Tirma collaborated.
The mayor of Yaiza, Óscar Noda, thanks all the sponsoring and collaborating entities for their involvement, highlighting that “holding sports events in natural environments as privileged as the Papagayo Beaches allows us to project the image of Playa Blanca and Yaiza as a benchmark destination for outdoor and family sports”.
