The Inter-Island Federation of Las Palmas summoned the Lanzarote motoring community this Friday night for its 2023 Champions Gala, in which the trophies of the Island Championship promoted by the Cabildo of Lanzarote and its Department of Sports were awarded.
During the event, a couple of videos were shown as a summary of the past year, one dedicated to the rallysprints and the Haría climb, another to the Orvecame Rally and the two promotions that are being carried out for the Isla de los Volcanes-Ciudad de Arrecife Rally Trophy and the new Eco-Rally Isla de Lanzarote were also shown, two events that will be held next July and that describe very well the promising future of motorsport in Lanzarote.
In the clubs section, Escudería Lanzarote was the champion. In category 3, the podium of the driver-co-driver competition was composed in descending order by: Jordi García-Carlos Díaz, Alberto Santana-Brian Cabrera and Alberto Argón-Pablo Aragón. In category 2, the top three were: Javier Cañada-Jonathan Hernández, Alfredo Guerra-Lara Curbelo and Pedro Luzardo-Héctor Carballo.
The absolute champion of Lanzarote 2023 in drivers was Yeray Lemes, followed by Oliver Rodríguez and Antonio Suárez. In the co-drivers section, it was won by Jorge Cedrés and David Rivero and Aitor Cambeiro completed that podium, in that order.
It was attended by the Minister of Sports of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Juan Monzón, as well as the president of the FALP, Miguel Angel Domínguez, among other institutional representatives, such as the mayors of Tinajo and Haría, Jesús Machín and Alfredo Villalba, respectively; the councilors of Sports of Tías and Teguise, Ismael Cruz and Alejandro Ramírez, respectively; the councilor Roberto Hergón for the City Council of Arrecife, in addition to other councilors such as Carlos Cejudo (Teguise) and Ulpiano Calero (Tías), who together with the representatives of the organizing clubs of the Lanzarote events, Gerardo Rodríguez (Manguia Motor Sport), Víctor Rodríguez (Evesport), Dani Mesa (Lanzarote Titerroygatra), and the member of the FALP for Lanzarote, Julia Betancort. All these personalities were in charge of delivering each of the trophies to their owners or winners of the titles at stake.
Among the numerous interventions of the institutional representatives, there was much unanimity in the high value that motoring is reaching in Lanzarote, with an island championship that has 28 editions with the 2024 one and to which a competition of the dirt specialty can be added shortly, as several new slaloms are scheduled plus the current events such as the Tinajo one and the Isla de los Volcanes Rally.
There were also allusions to look for formulas to support young drivers who are emerging in the Lanzarote competitions and to encourage the participation of the most outstanding local drivers with higher-level cars in high-ranking events such as the RTIV. In this aspect, the also driver Jesús Machín was the one who most defended these proposals, while the president of the FALP confirmed that the island dirt championship is on its way.
