Rayderley Zapata, known as Ray Zapata, from Conejero, has opened this Saturday the Olympic artistic gymnastics final at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. At 2:30 p.m. the athlete, born in the Dominican Republic but residing in Lanzarote since he was 10 years old, was the only Spaniard who managed to get into this Olympic event.

Zapata had stayed away from sports competitions for the last three years due to a calf injury.

The gymnast won the silver medal at the 2021 Tokyo Olympic Games and was also the gold winner at the 2015 European Games and bronze at the World Championships.

Rayderley Zapata was the first to participate in the final and obtained a score of 14.330. However, he has not been among the three highest scores of the event. The gold medal went to the Filipino gymnast Carlos Yuro.
