Zonzamas Plus Car Lanzarote has reached an agreement with Sergio Hernández Rodríguez for him to become the new coach of the first team starting from the 2026/2027 season, in what represents the first step of the new sports project that the Lanzarote entity wants to build for the coming years. The coach will replace Juan Rivera on the bench, who, after this period leading the team, will fully focus on his responsibilities as club president.
Native of Ciudad Real and born on December 2, 1996, Hernández arrives at Zonzamas after a growing career within national handball and coming from Balonmano Caserío, a club very consolidated in Spanish handball and recognized for its serious sports structure and its formative work. With eleven years of experience on the benches, he began his career as a very young coach, after an injury that led him to start working with youth teams at barely 18 years old. Since then he has been with clubs such as Maristas Granada and BM Bolaños, in addition to being part of the lower selections of Castilla-La Mancha and the university selection of Castilla-La Mancha.
Among the most notable milestones of his career are participation in two promotion phases to División de Honor with BM Bolaños, promotion to División de Honor Plata with BM Caserío, fourth place in the EUSA Games 2024 held in
Hungary and the title in the 2025 Spanish University Championship with the Castilla-La Mancha university team.
For the new batatero coach, his arrival at the club represents an important step in his career. Hernández himself acknowledges that he faces the challenge with enthusiasm and responsibility, pointing out that “I arrive at a club with history, with players consolidated in the national elite and with a professional structure that demands you give your best every day”, a challenge he assures he takes on “with responsibility, enthusiasm and with the clear intention of living up to what this club represents”.
The alignment with the board was one of the factors that facilitated the agreement. The coach explains that “the conversation with the board was really quick and we agreed on important points such as building a sustainable, attractive project that allows the club to grow in every sense”, a vision with which he assures he felt fully identified.
In sports, Hernández bets on a recognizable team with a clear identity on the court. In his game idea, he seeks for the group to have personality and security in each phase of the match, defending that “it is important that the team is clear on how to attack and how to defend, that each player complements her teammate and that we can bring out the best version of each one within the system”.
With the arrival of Sergio Hernández to the bench, Zonzamas Plus Car Lanzarote begins a new sporting stage marked by the commitment to a young, ambitious and with projection coach, called to lead the team's growth in the coming years.
