The municipal courts of Arrecife hosted this Thursday the final day of the San Ginés Senior Canarian Ball Tournament, an event included in the program of the patron saint festivities of Arrecife that brought together 130 participants, 11 in the men's category and as many in the women's, and which stood out for its inclusive nature with the participation of a mixed team from the El Cribo Mental Health Association.

It was jointly organized by the Fiestas and Seniors Areas of Arrecife, led by deputy mayor Echedey Eugenio and councilor Rosmen Quevedo, respectively, who agreed on the enthusiasm shown by the participating seniors during the three days of competition and their commitment to preserving the native sport of wooden Canarian ball.

“Coexistence and camaraderie”

They also highlighted the atmosphere of “coexistence and camaraderie that always accompanies these types of gatherings” and thanked the work carried out in the organization of the competition by Manuel Jesús García Fuentes, recognized with the Canarias Sports Award 2025 for his three decades of dedication to this emblematic traditional sport of the Canary Islands Archipelago.

Las Especiales was proclaimed champion in the women's category, while La Democracia took victory in the men's, putting the finishing touch to a competition marked by participation, sportsmanship, and a good atmosphere among the different teams. The event also allowed for the enjoyment of a sport closely linked to the identity and traditions of the Canary Islands, which maintains a notable presence among the seniors of Arrecife.

With the celebration of this tournament, the Fiestas and Seniors areas reinforce their commitment to incorporating sports and social activities for seniors within the San Ginés program, encouraging their active participation in the festivities and encounters between neighbors. The organization also highlighted the value of initiatives such as the participation of El Cribo, which contribute to moving towards celebrations that are increasingly inclusive and open to all citizens.
