Ray Zapata Wins Silver Medal in Tokyo

Ray Zapata from Lanzarote wins the silver medal in the artistic gymnastics floor final of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, which is held at the Ariake Gymnastics Center, thus awarding the sixth medal for the national delegation in the Japanese capital.

Zapata, who achieved a total of 14.933 points, established the same score as the Israeli Artem Dolgoypat, but he performed an exercise of greater difficulty (6.6 vs 6.5), which determined the Olympic gold. The bronze medal went to the Chinese Ruoteng Xiao (14.766).

The day promised for the gymnast of Dominican origin and nationalized Spanish, whose recent fatherhood had given him the plus he needed to storm the Olympic podium. This was acknowledged by Zapata before traveling to Tokyo and he has finally achieved what he was looking for. His intention was to impress but without forgetting that 'securing' is how medals are raised.

It is the sixth medal in Tokyo 2020 after those obtained by Adriana Cerezo (taekwondo), David Valero (Mountain Bike), Maialen Chourraut (slalom canoeing), Fátima Gálvez-Alberto Fernández (Olympic shooting) and Pablo Carreño (tennis); and the eighth for Spanish gymnastics and the fifth for artistic gymnastics in the history of the Olympic Games.
