Postponed the Rally of Tinajo for the risk for the Canarian houbara

“Until the last minute, the technical staff of the city council and the Cabildo de Lanzarote have been assessing the situation and trying to save the event, but in compliance with protection laws it has been unfeasible,” they point out from Evesport.

The Evesport Sports Club, organizer of the Tinajo dirt rally, has announced the postponement of this speed event, scheduled for this Saturday.

In a statement, it indicates that “in recent hours, the Tinajo City Council has received a notification of the existence of nests of birds classified as protected species in a part of the Tinajo-Las Betancoras track, where this competition of the Canary Islands Championship has usually been held”

“Until the last minute, the technical staff of the city council itself and the Island Council of Lanzarote have been assessing the situation and trying to save the event, but in compliance with protection laws it has been unfeasible,” they state.

“The organization has carried out the prior arrangements in accordance with all current regulations and requested the necessary permits in due time and form, but this unforeseen incident prevents its celebration,” says the statement.

Evesport “regrets the inconvenience that this postponement may cause for all participants, when everything was already prepared, including the conditioning of the dirt track,” it states and assures that it is already working on finding a new date in consensus with the federations and the Tinajo City Council.

Several ecological groups had shown their rejection of the rally's celebration, considering that it entails a “serious risk” for the Canarian houbara, one of the most threatened birds in the Canary Islands.

The environmental organizations recalled that there are scientific studies carried out in previous years,

presented to the Government of the Canary Islands, which have identified numerous display points for houbara males along the route planned for the event.
