In the best possible setting, the small beach of Playa Blanca, where the quarry of Canarian wrestling in the south of Lanzarote is formed by the hand of Tomás Quesada, and within the incomparable framework of the festivities of the Virgen del Carmen, the sports family of the municipality of Yaiza celebrated last Saturday the three-time championship of the senior team of the Unión Sur Yaiza Joaquín Rodríguez Wrestling Club 'Pollo de Uga'.
Under the direction of coach Ernesto Saavedra, he conquered the Lanzarote Island Council League, the Cajasiete Government of the Canary Islands Tournament and the Mamerto Cabrera Medina Super Cup, "more than enough reasons to celebrate this season," said the mayor, Óscar Noda.
Surrounded by the southern fans, each of the wrestlers, the coach and the board of directors chaired by Emilio Machín, received from the hands of Óscar Noda, the Councilor for Sports of Yaiza, Ángel Lago, and fellow councilors of the municipal government team, a commemorative plaque and tribute to the feat and a copy of the book Lanzarote, in the terrero written by the journalist and researcher Manuel García Déniz.
Óscar Noda praised the historical trajectory of the Club and the three titles of the current season, pointing out "the good work, perseverance and discipline of all the wrestlers and the leadership of their coach, Ernesto Saavedra, who knew how to unite the group so that each wrestler gave their best version, integrating very young wrestlers from the Playa Blanca quarry such as Tiago Cáceres and other veterans such as Francis García."
By the way, Francis García, was chosen as the most spectacular wrestler in the friendly fight that rounded off the celebration between Yaiza and the Unión Antigua Wrestling Club, a guest from Fuerteventura, which defeated the locals by a score of 10-12.
Councilor Ángel Lago, who was a wrestler and commander of Yaiza, thanked the fans for their support of the Club and had emotional words for those he still considers wrestling partners: "Canarian wrestling is a tradition that we all carry in our hearts and today we celebrate with joy and feeling these triumphs that not only make the Club of our lives bigger, but also enrich the native sport, getting new generations to join Canarian wrestling."
All the wrestlers were cheered and the Tenerife native Isael Rodríguez did not hesitate to describe his time at Yaiza as "the best season of my life in Canarian wrestling, for the historical sports results and especially for the affection of the fans. I am very sorry to leave the Club, but strictly personal reasons force me to close, for the moment, my stage in Yaiza."
The Canarian wrestling family ended the afternoon with a meeting of fraternization in the La Aurora socio-cultural center of Playa Blanca. The wrestlers led by Ernesto Saavedra who made the three-time championship possible are: Ayonath Morín, Yerove Santos, Tiago Cáceres, Abián Reyes, Gonzalo Campos, Jesús Afonso, Raúl Caraballo, Alejandro Carrara, Martín García, Alejandro Martín, Kevin Ortega, David Pacheco, Francis García, Juan Miguel Cruz, Shane Hernández, Chencho Rivero, Isael Rodríguez and Echedey Acuña. All the photos of the tribute are published on the website of the City Council.
