At noon this Friday, December 18, the mayor of Yaiza, Óscar Noda, the Councilor for Sports, Ángel Lago, and the Head of Tourism, Ángel Domínguez, kicked off the first edition of the Yaiza Extremo Sur Trail & MTB, in which more than 200 athletes will tour the spectacular landscapes of our municipality practicing trail running or mountain biking.
Leon Drajer and Santiago Rodríguez were in charge of inaugurating the event, departing from the Plaza de La Alameda de Yaiza at 12:00 noon on Friday to complete the 45 km route proposed by the mountain bike modality, after passing through the perceptive anticovid control installed at the entrance of the enclosure and which includes temperature taking and hand washing with hydroalcoholic gel.
After them, in intervals of fifteen minutes and in groups of five, the rest of the mountain bike participants assigned for Friday's session left and from 2:15 p.m. the trail athletes joined, starting with those of the long distance, of 21 km, and followed by the starter groups (13 km) that began at 3:15 p.m.
The weather accompanied during the first day of the Yaiza Extremo Sur Trail & MTB, since despite threatening rain for a while it finally held up and the athletes were able to enjoy a cool atmosphere.
This Saturday the competition continues with departures of all modalities from 8:00 a.m. and so far, having already reached the equator of the event, no incidents have had to be regretted nor has it been necessary to request medical assistance.
As a curiosity, the organization highlights the participation of three athletes who have competed in two modalities of the Yaiza Extremo Sur Trail & MTB such as the runner Tessa Kortekaas, who yesterday completed the 45 km of the MTB and at 2:00 p.m. this Saturday she finished the 21 km segment of the trail; Aitor Navarro, who has done the two trails, the 13 km and the 21 km, being also a strong candidate to take the first place in the short race; and Roberto Carlos, who has also completed the MTB and the 13 km trail.
This Sunday the competition continues until noon so that a total of 220 athletes can complete the event, 113 in the Trail modality -specifically 73 in the starter distance (13 km) and 40 in the 21 km- and 107 in the mountain bike modality with a distance of 45 km.
The Head of Sports of Yaiza, Ángel Lago, is very satisfied with how the event is developing and with the compliance by the athletes of the security measures imposed by the organization, highlighting that "it is also serving for some administrations to open their eyes and see that there are alternatives that allow to reconcile sports practice with measures to prevent the spread of covid-19".
