Laurens Verluyten and Lourdes Oyarbide have taken the victory in the time trial of the first stage of the Cycling Tour of Lanzarote, which started at 8:30 a.m. at Club La Santa. On this first day, the more than 500 cyclists faced a total of 115 kilometers, with an accumulated positive difference in altitude of almost 1,800 meters.
With the spectacular peloton riding in a group, each municipality and each regrouping area experienced a real party, with hundreds of fans encouraging the participants and enjoying a recreational event for all ages.
The time trial began in Haría, the most spectacular part of the day. In the last meters of it, Laurens Verluyten prevailed over Daniel Ocaña, whom he surpassed by 10 seconds, with Jorge Wilkes crossing the finish line in third place. In the women's classification, Lourdes Oyarbide dominated the time trial from start to finish, reaching the Mirador del Río 44 seconds before her main pursuer, the Danish Signe Thomsen. Her compatriot Nanna Espensen completed the podium.
At the end of the stage, Levin Veale and Signe Thomsen set the best time at the finish line in the men's and women's categories, respectively.
Looking ahead to this Sunday's stage, the participants will depart from Puerto del Carmen, head to the west of the island, passing through areas such as Playa Blanca and Yaiza, and end this adventure at the Club La Santa facilities. Along the way, 74 kilometers of route and more than 1,000 meters of accumulated positive difference in altitude in which they will enjoy the incredible landscapes of Lanzarote.
