The Canary Islands Canarian Ball Team Championship 2025 will be held on September 20 and 21 at the Paseo del Viento in Costa Teguise, in Lanzarote, where 22 Canarian ball courts have already been set up, turning the town into the epicenter of this native sport. The event, which will begin on Saturday at 4:00 p.m., will bring together representative teams from all the islands in the youth, senior men's and senior women's categories.
In total, teams from Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Tenerife, El Hierro and La Palma will participate, competing in a Swiss system in the first round, a format that guarantees that all teams play several games, pairing up in each round with rivals of similar performance. This method allows for a fairer classification of the best teams before the direct elimination rounds, until reaching the semi-finals and finals on Sunday.
Each team will be made up of a minimum of six athletes, who will be divided into different modalities of the game. Over the weekend, a total of five days will be played, including the finals. Regarding the development of the games, they will be played to 12 balls or with a time limit: the squares, 60 minutes plus an extra hand; and the doubles and individual, 45 minutes plus an extra hand, according to the official regulations. The finals —at 60 minutes and an extra hand—, which will take place on Sunday at 11:30 a.m., will be broadcast live by Televisión Canaria, which for three years has brought this traditional sport closer to all citizens.
The president of the Canary Islands Canarian Ball and Petanque Federation, Alicia Suárez, stressed that "this championship is the most significant for our federation, since it has the most outstanding athletes from all the islands in this traditional discipline, highlighting that there is no age or gender condition for its practice."
For her part, the general director of Native Sports of the Ministry of Education, Vocational Training, Physical Activity and Sports, Lorena Hernández, stressed that this championship is a celebration of identity and tradition. "The Canarian ball has its great annual showcase in this event, where each island shows its talent and commitment to a sport that is part of our culture." She also stressed that, for the Government of the Canary Islands, "this event is one of the most important in the annual calendar of our traditional games and sports, not only because it is a sport that is practiced in all the islands of the archipelago, but also because it brings together the best of Canarian ball, both female and male."
The championship is supported by the Government of the Canary Islands, which collaborates with the Canary Islands Ball Federation in the organization of this regional event. "This cooperation reflects the commitment of the autonomous Executive to the preservation and promotion of traditional sports, and reinforces with this championship its support for native sports, promoting its projection and ensuring that new generations find in the Canarian ball a reference of values, coexistence and roots," they point out.
In this sense, the Ministry of Education, Vocational Training, Physical Activity and Sports, directed by Poli Suárez, has defined the promotion of native and traditional sports as one of its strategic lines of legislature, convinced that they constitute an essential element of the cultural and educational heritage of the islands.
