Lanzarote Puerto del Carmen fell defeated this Saturday at the Pabellón Las Espartanas in Pozuelo de Calatrava (Ciudad Real) against the leader, Soliss Bm. Pozuelo de CVA (29-19) in a match corresponding to the twenty-sixth and final matchday of the women's División de Honor Oro.
Defeat without consequences for the tiñosa squad, which had nothing to play for against the leaders after securing permanence in the penultimate league matchday. Pozuelo finishes the regular league as the sole leader with forty-two points, becoming the first women's team from Castilla-La Mancha to reach the elite of Spanish handball by ascending to Iberdrola. Puerto del Carmen occupies twelfth place with seventeen points and will remain in Oro next season. Mislata and Carballal are relegated.
The Lanzaroteñas arrived in Ciudad Real with several injured players, including coach Jesús Casanova, who was replaced on the bench by Toño Cedrés.
Just like in the first leg, a decidedly depleted Puerto del Carmen put up a fight against the leader until halftime. The tiñoseras were four points down at halftime (12-8). In the second half, physical strength prevailed, as the home team had greater rotation possibilities, and mental strength, as the visitors had nothing to play for against a Pozuelo celebrating the league leadership with their fans. In short, a match practically identical to the one played between the two teams in the Municipal de Tías in the first leg.
Daniela Xiomara Vaucher became the top scorer of the match and of the home team with six goals. In the Lanzaroteño team, Beatriz Masseu's five goals stood out.
For the interim coach of Puerto del Carmen, Toño Cedrés, "it was a match in which we already had permanence and they already had the leadership, so it was a match with little at stake, a match in which we entered with little tension, although we also had many absences, we could only count on ten players because the rest were injured. We had few rotations and we tried to hold on as long as we could, trying to pace ourselves, trying not to wear ourselves out too much, especially in the first half, but, in the end, Pozuelo's rotation compared to ours was superior and the lack of tension in the game was also noticeable, especially in the second half where we could no longer maintain the initial rhythm of the first half. We were much more tired. We did what we could with the few players we had."
"In defense, the first half, we started a little weak, they gave us a pretty big run initially. Then we started to adjust the defense a little, we gave it more intensity and we started to have a little more success in attack. We managed to go into halftime, I think, four points down. In the second half, as I said, we had nothing to play for and our players were tired from the whole trip, the second half was quite uphill for us. Even so, I want to thank, above all, the effort of the players, for having been there until the last day in such a difficult season, on the front lines and for having given everything they had until the last game. I only have words of gratitude in that regard. Now to rest and think about next season," concluded Toño Cedrés.
