The Island Sports Service of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, in collaboration with the Island Federation of Canarian Wrestling, has launched a project to promote and teach Canarian Wrestling in the island's schools. This initiative seeks to bring the native sport closer to the youngest, promoting its practice and ensuring its continuity among future generations.
The project began at CEIP Yaiza, where students had the opportunity to learn about and experience firsthand the techniques and values of Canarian Wrestling. Over the next few months, the activity will be extended to other schools throughout the island, allowing a large number of schoolchildren to become familiar with this traditional discipline.
The Sports Councilor of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Juan Monzón, highlighted the importance of this initiative: "It is an interesting and necessary project to ensure that Canarian Wrestling remains part of our identity. We started in Yaiza, but we will be touring different educational centers to bring this sport, which is so much ours, closer to the youngest."
Monzón also wanted to congratulate the Island Federation of Canarian Wrestling and its coordinator, Diego Cazorla, for their effort and dedication in organizing this program. "It is essential to continue working to highlight the native sport of the Canary Islands and strengthen its presence in the education of our young people," added the councilor.
The Cabildo of Lanzarote "reaffirms its commitment to the promotion of grassroots sports and the preservation of the sporting traditions of the islands, ensuring that Canarian Wrestling remains a fundamental part of the cultural and sporting heritage of Lanzarote," they conclude.
