Gran Canaria U22 was proclaimed champion of the Torneo de Los Dolores de Baloncesto 2025, organized by CB Tizziri Tinajo and supported by local institutions and sponsors. Beyond the competition, the event had a marked emotional character, serving as a tribute to the recently deceased player and coach, Pablo Brieba.
The tournament, which had the support of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, through its Insular Sports Service, the Tinajo City Council, the Canarian Basketball Federation and the company Sia, in addition to the main sponsorship of Club La Santa and Jadilanz Airecomprimido, brought together three teams in the Tinajo Municipal Pavilion: the host CB Tizziri Tinajo, the CD Toscones de Corralejo and the Gran Canaria U22.
The action began on Friday with the duel between the organizing team, participating in the Interinsular League Lanzarote-Fuerteventura, and the Majorera team of CD Toscones, who will face the season in the Third FEB. The Corralejo team took the victory by 49 to 67.
On Saturday morning, Tizziri Tinajo faced Granca U22, a team that will compete in the newly created national U22 league. The Claretian superiority was reflected in the score: 47 to 118. In the afternoon came the decisive clash, where the title was decided between Majorera and Gran Canaria teams. Gran Canaria U22 imposed its rhythm to win by 59 to 87 and lift the champion trophy.
The closing ceremony was attended by Fran Fortes, head of CB Tizziri Tinajo, the Councilor for Physical Activity and Sports of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, Juan Monzón, and the Mayor of Tinajo, Jesús Machín. In addition to the collective trophies, Moussa Coulibay, from Gran Canaria U22, was recognized as the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the tournament.
The event, however, transcended the sporting aspect. In parallel to the competition, a tribute was paid to the memory of Pablo Brieba, player and coach of the Tinajero club who recently passed away. His family members received a commemorative souvenir from the club and the institutions. The Tizziri cadet players, whom he coached last season, dedicated some emotional words, while CD Tinajo, a football club where he also played, joined with a gesture of support to the family.
The most emotional moment came when Pablo Brieba's father took the microphone to thank everyone for their expressions of affection and to recognize the effort of all the teams for participating in a tournament that his son had prepared with enthusiasm. The day concluded with a great collective applause and a family photo that symbolized the union of the sports community around his figure.
With the hope that the tournament will continue in future editions, the organization stressed its desire to keep the memory of Pablo Brieba alive, while consolidating this event in the calendar of Canarian basketball.
