Lanzarote Puerto del Carmen has obtained this Saturday at the Municipal de Tías an agonizing victory in the visit of AD Carballal (28-27) in a match corresponding to the twenty-second matchday of the Women's Honor Gold Division.
With four matchdays left to play until the end of the regular league, the "tiñoseras" manage to defeat a direct rival for permanence and, after many months, they place twelfth with thirteen points, leaving behind Mislata, with twelve points, but with one game less and Carballal's own team which remains in last place in the standings with nine points.
Victory almost on the buzzer, but in one of the worst matches of the black and gold season, bad in attack and bad in defense. The Galicians started strong. Puerto could not score until the fifth minute (1-4). Only Beatriz Masseu saw a gap in the visitor's goal, but the local defense was continuously leaking. Quickly, Casanova's first timeout arrived (2-6, min. 6:49). After the break, the same feelings continued and the Galician goalkeeper, Lidia Portela, continued causing enormous problems to the Tiñosero attack. After two minutes to Antia Seijo, Masseu opened the chapter of the posts, very present in the first half (2-9, min. 10:38).
Mónica Cabrera broke a long local drought in the eleventh minute. Another two minutes to Yaiza Alonso for pushing Dely Leiva on a shot helped Puerto minimally get into the game (5-9, min. 13). Two-minute expulsions followed on both sides. The number of posts hit by Puerto del Carmen rose to seven in the twenty-seventh minute. Despite the bad luck, the locals gradually closed in on the scoreboard tiense (9-13). In the last moments of the first half, both defenses suffered expulsions that made the atmosphere of the match tense before halftime.
The second half began with a save by Made and another two minutes for the Galician players, for Sabela Vázquez, due to a blow to the neck of Brenda Torres who scored shortly after and returned some hope to the yellow-stained stands, aware of the importance of the clash for the future of both teams. Lidia Portela continued to wall off the Galician goal. Despite another two minutes for Mónica Cabrera, Puerto did not cease its positive inertia, got to within three goals and provoked the visitor timeout (15-18, min.7:28).
But Puerto del Carmen had smelled the blood it appreciates, that of counterattacks, a positive facet in the game, in addition to the grit shown at the end. Made Cortez spread her golden wings and the stands vibrated (16-18, min.9), but Carballal reacted with two consecutive goals. The scare of the match arrived in min. 19:35 when Grete Damora, trying to catch an elusive ball in attack, fell injured (20-23).
The Galician women took advantage of the confusion to return to a four-goal difference. Antía Seijo, less of a scorer than in other matches, demonstrated her character and talent, a very quick first step that had driven the Tiñosera defenders crazy all game. Casanova's timeout arrived, but it was no use, the visitors continued with their own (20-26, min. 22).
Sabela Vázquez saw the red card, but her team was five points ahead. At that moment, Puerto gave itself over to heart and grit and, spurred on by the fans, returned to within four points (22-296, min. 24). The "tiñoseras" were not comfortable, weak in attack and weak in defense. The Galicians saw themselves close to the longed-for victory. Casanova put Brenda Torres in individual coverage on Antía Seijo. Carballal did the same and put Seijo on Beatriz Masseu. Both teams wanted to nullify each other, but Puerto, rowing and rowing, got to within just two goals with little more than two minutes to play (25-27). Dely Leiva scored on the counterattack without even suspecting that she was going to become the heroine of the night (26-27, min.28:20). Carballal failed at the worst moment and Puerto tied the match. With the team running towards the opposing goal, Casanova called a timeout with a breath left to play (27-27, min.29:54). The gamble paid off for her. Defensive error by the Galicians who left Dely Leiva alone and she scored the winning goal moments before the final buzzer. The yellow players and the stands erupted with joy, a feeling that contrasted with the disappointment of the visitors.
Beatriz Masseu became the top scorer of the match with eight goals, well supported in the offensive aspect by the seven goals of two players, Brenda Torres and Dely Leiva. In the ranks of Carballal, the six goals of Naihara Costas stood out.
For the Tiñosero coach, Jesús Casanova, “it has been, without a doubt, the worst game of the season. We were not on the court at any time, neither defensively nor offensively, only perhaps in some counterattack or another in which we were able to offer the performance of other games, but come on, horrible, especially in the first half. At no time did we have options against Carballal, they beat us in all facets of the game, both in defense and attack. In the second half we continued to play badly, with many shooting errors, but, at least, the players showed a bit more grit, of honor and, through pushes, defending well and running, we were able to tie the game. That last play was expensive for us and gave us two very important points, but very hard-fought and, honestly, I think deserved,” concluded the coach of Puerto del Carmen.
With four matchdays left to play, Lanzarote Puerto del Carmen will return to competition on April 18, at 9:00 PM (peninsular time) at the Macarena Aguilar Pavilion in Bolaños de Calatrava (Ciudad Real), against Vino Doña Berenguela Bm. Bolaños, a team that this week fell on the court of Lobas Global Ataca Oviedo (23-20) and occupies the fifth position in the standings with thirty points.
