The island of Lanzarote will be the stage this Saturday for the birth of a new sporting event, which comes in response to the need to satisfy the demand for long-distance swimming events. Everything is ready for the celebration of the first edition of the Ultravesía Oasis Gran Casino Puerto del Carmen, a crossing that has distances of 20 and 10 kilometers and will be held throughout the bay of Lanzarote. The Ultravesía Oasis Gran Casino Puerto del Carmen becomes the longest swimming crossing in the Canary Islands.
On Thursday afternoon, the presentation of the first edition of the Ultravesía Oasis Gran Casino Puerto del Carmen took place, with a press conference held on the terrace of the Oasis Gran Casino in Puerto de Carmen. Pedro Torres, head of Swimmingpoint Lanzarote, and Katy Torres, commercial director of the Oasis Gran Casino Puerto del Carmen, were in charge of announcing all the details of the sporting event that will be held on the morning of Saturday, September 12.
Pedro Torres, head of Swimmingpoint Lanzarote, explained that the Ultravesía Oasis Gran Casino Puerto del Carmen is a "novel event in the Canary Islands open water circuit" and pointed out that "it is the longest swimming crossing of those held in Canary Islands waters". Pedro Torres commented that the 20-kilometer race will have the participation of 8 swimmers and the participation in the 10-kilometer race will be 31 swimmers.
Oasis Gran Casino Puerto del Carmen has been one of the companies that has strongly supported the first edition of the Ultravesia Oasis Gran Casino Puerto del Carmen. Commercial director Katy Torres pointed out that "the organizers have our full support and we will continue working with them to promote a sporting event that is born to stay on the Lanzarote sporting calendar". Katy Torres wished all participants good luck and the organizers the greatest success.
Among the participants of the I Ultravesía Oasis Gran Casino Puerto del Carmen, the presence of Andy Ortega stands out, a swimmer who will perform the test without neoprene and with the intention of starting to prepare for the challenge of crossing the English Channel. Carmelo Santana and Abián Reino will also be present in the Lanzarote event, being outstanding long-distance Canarian swimmers. The I Ultravesía Oasis Gran Casino Puerto del Carmen will feature the participation of Ana Iris Niz, the only woman on the list of entrants, who arrives at this event after participating a few weeks ago in the Islas Cies crossing.
The weather forecasts indicate that on Saturday morning the swimmers will encounter waves from the northeast, which together with the current will make the first part of the course difficult. The start will be given on the beach located in the lower area of the Oasis Gran Casino Puerto del Carmen facilities, the place where the finish line will also be located. The swimmers of the 10-kilometer distance will have the turning buoy at the head of the Lanzarote airport and the swimmers of the 20-kilometer distance will have to reach the vicinity of El Reducto beach in Arrecife.
The participants of the Ultravesía Oasis Gran Casino Puerto del Carmen will be accompanied at all times by kayaks and canoes. Spectators who wish to follow the event can do so from the coast. The buoys that mark the route, the kayaks and the canoes, will have large helium balloons, which will make it easier for spectators to visualize the swimmers. The swimmers of the main event will take between five and six hours to complete the 20-kilometer course.
The Ultravesía Oasis Gran Casino Puerto del Carmen will conclude on Saturday night, with the awards ceremony taking place from 9:00 p.m., awarding the top three finishers in each of the distances and differentiating the swimmers who have completed the course with or without neoprene. The awards ceremony will take place on the terrace of the Oasis Gran Casino Puerto del Carmen, with all attendees being treated to a cocktail.
