The paratriathlete from Lanzarote, Lionel Morales, has managed to be proclaimed winner this weekend in the event held in Alhandra (Portugal) of the 2026 World Triathlon Para Cup in his PTS2 category.
Morales has demonstrated with his victory in Portuguese lands that he has reached the optimal point of form for the World Para Triathlon Championship that will take place in Pontevedra in just three weeks, from September 23 to 27, 2026.
Lionel Morales will arrive at the world event after achieving unbeatable results in recent weeks, as the victory in Alhandra is added to the triumph in the Paralympic Triathlon World Championship event that took place in Hungary and after being proclaimed Spanish champion again in Mérida.
Lionel Morales took the victory in Portugal (1:14:28), followed on the podium by Mexican Diego Lares (1:22:00) and American Carson Fox on the third step of the podium (1:22:42).
Morales achieved the best split in swimming (12:21) and on the bike (35:25), playing with the clock in the running split where he was already savoring victory. After the Portuguese event, he explained that “I arrived at the event with rib problems. I fell on Sunday in Lanzarote and I didn't know if I could run. I came here with a lot of pain and, in the end, today the least that bothered me were my ribs. I continue to have a lot of problems in the race with the prosthesis. I am making changes, but I have not yet been able to implement them. Let's see if I can have a decent World Championship. It's nothing, it's September 25th, in 20 days and let's see if I can recover from here to there and the leg discomfort goes away. In principle, there was a lot of current in the swimming, but I saved it well. The cycling was quite good, really, gaining quite a few watts. One more and then wait for the World Championship to arrive,” concludes Lionel Morales.
