Playa Blanca was the scene this Saturday of a new day of the V South Cup of 5-Meter Barquillos, with the celebration of the second and third round of the championship, whose joint score defined the winner of the Papagayo Trophy. With a total of 16 boats in the race and demanding weather conditions, the waters of southern Lanzarote offered a high-level spectacle, in which the tactics, experience and expertise of the crews made the difference.
At the beginning of the day, a minute of silence was observed in honor of Aarón Hernández Navarro, crew member of the Minerva Boat who passed away this weekend.
The first of the day's regattas - corresponding to the second day of the Cup - was dominated by Nete Armas' Graciplus, which took the victory after a solid and constant performance throughout the test. They were followed by Cristian Sánchez's Tritón, who showed a clear intention to fight for the lead, and the Playa Blanca skippered by Virginia Morales, who arrived as provisional leader after the inaugural day.
The second round of the day, the third in the Cup calendar, changed the script. Cristian Sánchez's Tritón knew how to read the wind and sea conditions better, prevailing over the rest of the participants. The Di Napoli Isidoro y Manuela III, a majorera boat from José Pascual Perdomo, achieved a meritorious second position, while Nete Armas' Graciplus once again added important points with a third place.
The sum of both regattas finally awarded the Papagayo Trophy to Tritón, with a total of three points, one less than Graciplus (4 points) and four ahead of Playa Blanca (7 points), which could not maintain the pace in the second round of the day.
As for the provisional general classification of the V South Cup, after three regattas held, the panorama is very even. Graciplus and Playa Blanca share the lead of the table with 8 points each, closely followed by Di Napoli Isidoro y Manuela III with 11 points, and Tritón and Jameos del Agua of Alfredo Morales, both with 12 points.
The excitement continues next Sunday with the celebration of the fourth and fifth days, which will once again take place in the bay of Playa Blanca. These two tests will define the winner of the Piedra de Playa Blanca Trophy, a special distinction linked to an emblematic place where fans enthusiastically follow each turn and each close-hauled from the mainland.
The Councilor for Sports of Yaiza, Ángel Lago, encourages fans and residents in general "not to miss the competition next Sunday in the bay of Playa Blanca because we have a guaranteed show with fifteen boats in the race and a V South Cup that promises a lot of excitement until the end".
