Club La Santa has announced that its hotel and sports complex, located in Tinajo, which has hosted the 34 editions of the Ironman Lanzarote "will cease to organize and give its name to the event" starting in 2027. This was communicated at noon this Tuesday in a note distributed to the media signed together with the organization of the Ironman sporting event, in which they have not explained the reasons for this decision.
In this statement, they explained that Club La Santa has been fundamental in the history of Ironman Lanzarote since it began to be held on the island in 1992. In these three decades, the organization has welcomed 50,000 athletes to the island to face one of the "most iconic and challenging" courses in this sport.
Despite this breakup, the representatives of Ironman in Europe have indicated that soon details and registration dates will be announced for the 2027 edition, which implies that the event will continue to be organized.
A legacy "extraordinary in sport, culture and tourism"
Both have pointed out that their collaboration has contributed to positioning Lanzarote as a destination of "world renown" for long-distance and adventure sports, which for both represents "an extraordinary legacy in sport, culture, and tourism". After announcing its disassociation with Ironman, Club La Santa has announced that it will continue "building" this legacy through other events and competitions. At the same time, they have announced that after working "side by side" in recent years, "the door will be open to future collaborations".
Over three decades, Club La Santa has welcomed some of the sport's biggest stars to the island. Lucy Charles-Barclay debuted on the IRONMAN calendar in 2016, winning IRONMAN Lanzarote in both 2017 and 2025. Jan Frodeno also chose to compete in IRONMAN Lanzarote in 2016, the same year he secured his second consecutive IRONMAN World Championship title.
IRONMAN Lanzarote is a must-do race on any "bucket list", with a course equally renowned for its difficulty and beauty. Athletes begin with an open-water swim in the crystal-clear waters of Playa Grande before tackling a challenging bike course that winds through Timanfaya National Park, the moon-like vineyards of La Geria, and the island's iconic volcanic terrain, all exposed to Lanzarote's characteristic trade winds. The run along the Puerto del Carmen promenade offers both coastal views and a festive atmosphere as athletes strive to reach the finish line.
For its route, which mixes open water swimming between Playa Blanca, a bike route through Timanfaya National Park or the vineyards of La Geria, as well as the foot race along the promenade of Puerto del Carmen, both have defended that Ironman Lanzarote "continues to be one of the most unforgettable and respected races on the world calendar".
Those responsible for the Ironman assure their commitment to the race
For his part, Thomas Veje Olsen, General Manager of Ironman for Europe, Middle East, and Africa, has thanked Club La Santa "for the exceptional collaboration and commitment they have provided to this race since 1992." At the same time, they added, that "they have been the best possible organizers of IRONMAN Lanzarote and we could not have found a better or more passionate partner." "Our sincere gratitude goes to the entire Club La Santa team, whose dedication to the athletes and our sport has helped make this event one of the most iconic races on the global Ironman calendar.”
“Looking to the future, we maintain our commitment to honor and develop the extraordinary legacy that Club La Santa has created here in Puerto del Carmen, and to continue offering an exceptional experience to athletes in Europe's oldest IRONMAN event.”
Fabio Cabrera, director of Club La Santa IRONMAN Lanzarote, commented: “We would like to thank all the public institutions that have supported the event throughout its history and that have shared our commitment to work for the benefit of the island. In particular, we acknowledge the support of the Government of the Canary Islands, the Cabildo de Lanzarote, Lanzarote Sports Destination and the town councils of the island's seven municipalities. Our gratitude also extends to the security forces and emergency services, Civil Protection, the Directorate General of Traffic, our sponsors, the employees of Club La Santa and the hundreds of volunteers whose dedication makes the event possible every year. Although we will not organize IRONMAN Lanzarote from 2027 onwards, the IRONMAN family (athletes, volunteers, partners, etc.) will always be special to Club La Santa and we will continue to support in every way possible.”
Despite its disassociation with Ironman Lanzarote, Club La Santa has assured that it reaffirms its commitment to the promotion of sport on the island and they have assured that they will continue innovating and creating "unique experiences for our guests and for sports lovers."
