The Lanzarote driver Javier Cañada, co-driven by Aday Ortiz, wrote a new page in his sporting career this weekend by becoming the winner of the Peugeot Rally Cup Ibérica at the prestigious Rallye Rías Baixas 2026, one of the most emblematic events on the national calendar.
The Canary Islands pair put on an outstanding performance on the demanding Galician asphalt, setting a very competitive pace from the first kilometers and demonstrating great ability to manage a particularly difficult race due to the high temperatures, which pushed both teams and mechanics to their limits.
The victory was even more meritorious after the setback suffered during the competition. A problem with the handbrake at a junction forced the crew to reverse, losing valuable time. However, far from giving up, Cañada and Ortiz responded with a spectacular comeback, setting benchmark times stage after stage until they regained the lead and achieved a victory of enormous prestige.
At the end of the race, Javier Cañada expressed his satisfaction with the result: "We drove very fast and with very good feelings throughout the rally. It was a very demanding race, with a lot of heat and a very high level. We had a problem with the handbrake at a junction, we had to reverse and we lost a lot of time. Then we had to push to the maximum and we recovered until we achieved the victory. We had been coming to Rías Baixas for several years fighting to win and, finally, this year we have been able to achieve it. I am very happy for the whole team because this triumph is the reward for everyone's work."
The Lanzarote driver also wanted to dedicate a few words of thanks to those who make his sporting project possible: "I want to thank the enormous work done by the whole team during the assistance, which has been perfect, as well as the support of all the fans, who have cheered us on at every stage and every corner. This triumph is also theirs."
The Rallye Rías Baixas was marked by extreme weather conditions, with very high temperatures that tested the endurance of drivers, co-drivers, teams, organization, and fans. In this scenario, the consistency, strategy, and excellent pace shown by the Lanzarote formation were decisive in reaching the top of the podium.
With this important victory, Javier Cañada and Aday Ortiz consolidate their excellent season within the Peugeot Rally Cup Ibérica, reinforcing their aspirations in the championship and confirming the great sporting moment the team is going through.
Javier Cañada's sporting project has the support of the Centers of Art, Culture and Tourism of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, the Department of Sports of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, the Escudería Lanzarote, the Las Palmas Automobile Federation (FALP), the Canary Islands Automobile Federation (FCA), AMP Transportes, Jimy Motorsport and Lanzarote Isla Diferente, whose support is fundamental to continue competing at the highest level.
