Last weekend, Saturday, October 25, and Sunday, October 26, the 1st Lanzaloe Onechess Active Tournament was held at the Sociedad Democracia in Arrecife, an event that brought together 91 participants from Gran Canaria, Tenerife, La Palma, Fuerteventura, and Lanzarote, becoming one of the most prominent events on the regional chess calendar.
For two intense days, chess was the main protagonist in an environment that combined sportsmanship, concentration, and camaraderie. The tournament crowned International Master José García Padrón as champion, followed by FIDE Master José Antonio Herrera in second position, and the young talent Alberto Bethencourt, who completed the podium after an outstanding performance that confirms his projection within the Canary Islands scene.
The event was highly valued by the participants, who highlighted the excellent organization and the great atmosphere that was experienced during the games. The young chess players of the island also had the opportunity to face titled players, an experience that reinforces their learning and sports growth.
The organization, run by the Onechess Lanzarote club with the support of Lanzaloe, managed to offer a dynamic tournament of a high technical level and with impeccable logistical management. The Sociedad Democracia became the ideal setting for a meeting that demonstrated that Lanzarote has an increasingly solid and enthusiastic chess community.
With this first tournament, the Onechess club "reaffirms its commitment to promoting chess on the island and lays the foundation for future editions that will continue to promote the practice and enjoyment of this sport at all ages."
