The bay of Arrecife was the scene this Sunday for the spectacular start of the RORC Transatlantic Race, one of the most prestigious ocean races on the international calendar, which has once again placed the island at the center of world sailing.
The day kicked off punctually with the first start for the monohulls at 12:30 PM, followed ten minutes later, at 12:40 PM, by the start of the multihulls. Conditions were ideal, with easterly winds of around 10 knots, offering an unbeatable scene for participants and spectators alike.
In this edition, 21 vessels are participating, with representation from almost 20 nationalities, and around 150 sailors, in addition to numerous visitors who have traveled to Lanzarote to closely follow the event. The initial course included the mandatory passage by the Puerto Calero mark buoy, where much of the anticipation was concentrated
Thousands of fans and curious onlookers gathered on the coast to enjoy the departure, both in Arrecife and Puerto Calero, joined by numerous support vessels that accompanied the fleet in the early stages of the regatta. The spectator boat was a great success, with over a hundred people on board, and the proceeds will be entirely donated to the Marine Litter Observatory, reinforcing the event's environmental commitment.
The public was able to enjoy a genuine nautical spectacle thanks to the presence of large and powerful vessels, such as the Raven (Baltic 111) and the BeCool (Swan 128), as well as the impressive MOD70 Argo and Zoulou. After rounding the Puerto Calero buoy, they notably increased their pace, reaching speeds exceeding 25 knots.
The departure was widely covered by the international nautical press, consolidating, once again, Lanzarote and Marina Lanzarote as a premium destination for preparing transatlantic crossings, and Calero Marinas as an organizer of high-level events, capable of attracting highly qualified nautical tourism to the island.
The race can be followed in real time via the official website of the organization. The RORC Transatlantic Race is organized by the Royal Ocean Racing Club, the International Maxi Association and the Yacht Club de France in association with Calero Marinas for the start from Lanzarote and is sponsored by the Government of the Canary Islands, Canary Islands, Cabildo de Lanzarote, Lanzarote Sports Destination, Deportes Cabildo de Lanzarote, Ayuntamiento de Arrecife, Deportes Arrecife and Turismo Arrecife and Cicar.
