The Arrecife City Council publicly congratulates the young boy from Lanzarote, Aduén Merino Gómez, 14 years old, for breaking the Spanish sub 14 record in the 3,000-meter race of the T12 category for athletes with visual disabilities. An extraordinary mark that has been recognized this week by the Spanish Sports Federation for the Blind (FEDC).

The Mayor of Arrecife, Astrid Pérez, and the Councilor for Sports, Roy González, offered an official reception this Friday morning, October 2, at the City Hall of the capital of Lanzarote.

Aduén Merino Gómez, a resident of Arrecife and a student at IES César Manrique, was accompanied at this reception by his mother, Ainhoa Gómez, and his coach from Club Adal, a sports team that has the support and sponsorship of the Arrecife City Council.

This young athlete from Lanzarote has broken the Spanish sub 14 record in the 3,000-meter race of the T12 category for athletes with visual disabilities, a national mark that he achieved this past weekend at the Canary Islands Championship held in Tenerife. This record has already been confirmed by the Spanish Sports Federation for the Blind (FEDC) this week. Aduén, a resident of Arrecife, is a boy who joined ONCE in 2016, at the age of 9, after discovering a visual problem caused by the congenital nisstasmus disease, which causes him a visual acuity of 0.10%, which does not prevent him from carrying out his day-to-day life normally on the island of Lanzarote despite the different barriers he must face in life.

The next event for the athlete from Lanzarote, from Club Adal, will be the Spanish Liberty Championship for Paralympic Promises in Athletics 2020, which will take place in Valencia on October 24 and 25. The Mayor of Arrecife, Astrid Pérez, conveyed her congratulations on behalf of the Corporation and her native municipality, and encouraged Aduén to continue achieving new sporting triumphs.

For his part, Roy González, as Councilor for Sports, has congratulated himself on this success and record for an athlete from Lanzarote, and a great club, such as Adal, which has become a source of talent for great island athletes.

The City Council presented him with a trophy with a dedication for his new achievements, and an official pennant with the municipal coat of arms, the same one that this little one wears printed on his competition equipment. The mother, Ainhoa Gómez, highlighted that Aduén was already winning prizes, from a very young age, in other sports disciplines. For her part, her coach remarked that Merino Gómez, due to his great mark, may be one of the great promises in the future in Spanish athletics for people with disabilities.

Aduén told the mayor, at the conclusion of the official reception, that he feels like "an authentic roadrunner."
