“Family”, “Effort”, “Passion” reads the mural with which the Arrecife City Council, through the Department of Citizen Participation led by Cathaysa Suárez, wanted to pay tribute to the San José Obrero Handball Club on the occasion of the commemoration this year of its 50th anniversary.
“The social relevance that San José Obrero has had for this city is as outstanding as its brilliant sporting career, which has positioned it as one of the leading handball clubs in the Canary Islands and one of the flagship clubs of Lanzarote sport”, highlights Cathaysa Suárez.
Drawn by the plastic artist Iván Tempera on the front of the pavilion that bears the name of the neighborhood, Titerroy, where the Club chaired by Juan Carlos Toledo was born half a century ago, the mural captures the throws of two female players and one male player as well as a goalkeeper in action.
Its measurements are 7 meters long by 4.5 meters high and it has been made with a brush and marker, highlighting red and black, the predominant colors in the San José Obrero uniform. It will also display the commemorative shield of the 50th anniversary, made of methacrylate, and at the bottom is the legend “C. Bm. San José Obrero a social phenomenon”.
Throughout 2025, commemorative activities will continue to be carried out, including the 50th anniversary Gala to be held on November 28 at the Víctor Fernández Gopar Theater ‘El Salinero’ in Arrecife, which will have the support of the City Council of the capital of Lanzarote, “as a sign of recognition and gratitude for the extraordinary function both in the sports and social fields that this leading club of Arrecife, Lanzarote and the Canary Islands has had throughout its half century of life”, emphasizes the deputy mayor of the city, Echedey Eugenio.
