When a strawberry Clipper is worth more than a PNL

In the Canary Islands, you no longer need to steal or mess up in Parliament to be crucified: it's enough to have a strawberry Clipper on vacation and record a funny video so that you are judged as if you had made a hole in the public coffers. Yes, I'm talking about Yoné Caraballo, a deputy from Nueva Canarias, and —watch out, here comes the big one!— his partner, who appears laughing with him in the middle of August. The perfect crime: resting and having a good time.

Here, the easy-click media prefer a video on a terrace to explaining a non-legislative proposal, a meeting with unions, or the defense of the island in Parliament. Because that, kid, you have to read it, understand it... and of course, it's not shared as quickly as a 15-second video with funny captions. Much better to invent a controversy than to report on what's important. Bread and circus, but without bread.

Defending Yoné is a no-brainer: he has the right to vacations and to have a sense of humor. And defending his partner, I don't even need to tell you: she's not a public figure, she doesn't get paid from anyone's pocket, and she doesn't have to put up with the long tongues of some for appearing in a video more innocent than a sancocho on a Sunday. But no, if she doesn't dance, it's bad; if she dances a little, it's worse; if she laughs, to the stake. The strawberry Clipper? Also suspicious.

And look, if they're criticizing this, it's because it's clear that he's doing well. Because with the autonomous government of CC and PP, the one that his boss Feijóo said that "vacations are overrated," it seems that some are bothered to see a politician who, in addition to working, allows himself to rest without hiding. Maybe what bothers them is not the video, but that they have nothing serious to throw at him.

The truth is that the only thing "viral" here is the mania of some for looking for trouble where there is none. If the worst that can be said about Yoné is that in his free time he accompanies his partner and holds a pink soda, well, that means there's nothing bad to take out. But of course, that doesn't sell.

So, my people, less cheap moralizing and more real politics. And if we have to toast to it, let it be with a very cold strawberry Clipper, because we already have enough heat and nonsense in August.
