What is the Senate for the Island of Lanzarote?

November 20 2015 (13:51 WET)

Broadly speaking, this question has a simple answer; Art, 66 Const.: legislative power of the State, the approval of its budgets, and the control of the action of the Government, but let's speak Canarian, let's speak clearly.

The Senate, as a territorial chamber, must serve to defend the interests and objectives of the different autonomous communities that represent it. And with the current political scenario existing within the framework of the Spanish State, in the next configuration of the Senate, there will be debate about the new model of Spain towards which we are destined to turn. The new stage that we have to live through will entail, without excuses, a reform of the Constitution and a new model of relationship between the communities in the State.

For a distant and insular territory, it is essential to place the problems related to insularity and distance at the center of the debate. If we are not capable of relativizing the epicenter of political life, no one will worry about our needs. The well-being of our people, the greater social progress and equality, the socio-economic development of this land requires the commitment of a party of Canarian obedience.

We want a fairer, more sensible Senate. A modern senate, within the framework of a modern Europe.

That is why Lanzarote cannot fail to be in that debate, we cannot miss an appointment that will mark the future of the Canary Islands, the future of Lanzarote. This island needs stable, lasting policies, with formations such as Coalición Canaria that, being from this land, promote a planning of actions that restore hope in Politics with a capital P. Therefore, Lanzarote cannot fail to be with its own voice in this political scenario, where its resonance allows to put its own reality on the table, propose investment proposals and request appearances to defend our rights as a people.

This will be a different Senate, which will not only remain as a chamber of "second reading", it will be a chamber with strength, with greater powers, in a shift to a more symmetrical system, more fair with the autonomous communities or who knows, if with a system of Federated States, with a Spanish Senate like the German Bundesrat. But well, what we do know is that Canarian nationalism must be in that seat in the Senate, a seat that has its own name, Lanzarote.

It is time for the Canary Islands, it is time for Lanzarote.
