For today's celebration of World Water Day, the United Nations has chosen "The answer is in Nature" as its motto. And what are they going to tell the people of Lanzarote, whose source of life and progress is in the sea that surrounds us? Our island essence was at the same time the origin and solution to the atavistic lack of water, thanks to the ingenuity of desalination processes and the immensity of the ocean.
We also know about droughts and the advance of desertification processes, while we relearn all that engineering of collection and use of scarce rainfall, which our ancestors devised and that in a somewhat reckless way we have turned into anthropological curiosity and museum pieces.
But global warming and water crises add to the dramatic consequences of floods and pollution of seas, rivers and oceans. Not even the most advanced cultures are free from the threat posed by the decline of water.
On this day, the Socialist Party proposes a "Country Agreement for a good Water Policy", which should be based on the protection of the natural cycle, the transparency of its management and the active participation of citizens. It is necessary to promote a hydrological transition towards planning models that aim at territorial balance and intergenerational solidarity.
Water is a public good that cannot be left in the hands of economic interests. In Lanzarote we have defended that criterion and we will remain there, from the conviction that access to water is an unquestionable right.
Indeed, the answer is in Nature. Let's be consistent and responsible with the main resource for life.
